In 2023, Johnnie B. lived with friends on the east side. The home was crowded, and conditions were not improving. Johnnie began a search for a home of her own. At 61, she was eligible for housing help and filled out many applications. Then, last December, she moved into the senior apartments in River Rouge. Upon moving in, Johnnie had no furniture. She was grateful when neighbors donated a sofa. She was resourceful! Johnnie collected a few end tables too. And, she didn't give up. Next Johnnie contacted Hannan Center. The bedroom she had she’d given to her son who had been homeless. Johnnie was sleeping on an airbed in her living room. Hannan Center helped Johnnie get a bed - and a dinette! By that time, her son had also found a home. Johnnie, and others like her, are connected to resources through the Zena Baum Senior Service Center at Hannan Center. With our help, their dignity and quality of life can be restored. Johnnie is just one of thousands of seniors in our community who need help. Hannan Center would like to congratulate our Social Work program for being awarded a $50,000 grant from the Ethel and James Flinn Foundation. This second half of a two-year grant continues our work at Hannan Center in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Seniors with Self-Neglect.
