FROM THE DESK OF CAROL TRAN, ESQ. In 2013, just one year after I joined the program, Hoban mock trial lost Jeff and Peg Schobert--its lead legal advisor and team mom. It was dealt a blow from which I thought the program could never recover. ? The next twelve years were filled with trials and tribulations. But the program somehow persisted. Students, teacher advisors, coaches--we continued to believe. We continued to dream. Someday, one day, we'd make it back. ? The path to rebuilding this program and victory hasn't been linear. Some years, we advanced far. Some years, our season ended early. But with each loss came lessons. And each loss stoked a fire--a desire--to win. To become undeniable. ? And so, on March 8, 2025, the little engine that could climbed the mountain to, at long last, be declared: "State Champions." ? Hanna, Campbell & Powell, LLP is proud to continue its support of the Akron Bar Foundation, which is the charitable arm of the Akron Bar Foundation that raises money for community grants and law school scholarships. For the fourth year in a row, HCP Attorney Carol Tran donated an exquisite homemade three-tiered cake to be raffled off at the annual gala. Congratulations to Archbishop Hoban High School’s mock trial program for a historic day at Regionals on February 7th. For the first time in Hoban’s mock trial history, they successfully advanced three teams to States. For context, typically only about 25 teams out of a pool of 300 make it to States from across the State of Ohio. And, in a delightful twist, Hoban Gold (coached in part by HCP Attorney Carol Tran) secured the 1st place trophy and Hoban Silver secured the 2nd place trophy. Since 2014, the Akron Bar Association has dedicated the Regionals competition to Jeff and Peg Schobert’s memory, naming the 1st place trophy after Jeff and the 2nd place trophy after Peg. CONGRATULATIONS to Archbishop Hoban High School’s mock trial program for advancing three teams out of Districts and securing the 1st place trophy on January 17th. Hoban’s mock trial program continues a winning legacy that was started by the late Jeff and Peg Schobert, and is carried on by HCP Attorney Carol Tran, APD Deputy Chief Mike Caprez, Attorney Chris Parker, Attorney Kurt Weitendorf, among others. This year’s problem concerns a hearing on a motion for a preliminary injunction to remove a defamatory generative AI deepfake video of an aspiring political candidate.
