Rachael Roth, 45, was diagnosed at birth with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) Type IV, a rare and complex disorder caused by a gene mutation that impacts bone formation and strength. While OI’s main feature is a fragile skeleton, it also affects many other body systems and tissue structures. Countless surgeries and interventions to address the disease caused Rachael’s left leg to stop growing, and for years, she wore a six-inch orthotic lift fit by clinicians at the Kansas City, KS #HangerClinic to correct her limb discrepancy. After consulting with her healthcare team amid years of ongoing chronic pain, Rachael made the decision to undergo the amputation of her left leg below the knee earlier this year. Since receiving her first prosthesis in August, she has been working hard to regain the ability to walk. "Hanger Clinic has been there for me for nearly half my life," Rachael shared. "From perfecting my orthotic shoe lift to brainstorming socket designs, they've always kept me 'in' on everything...I would not have been able to make it through this chapter of my life without them. I'm so grateful for their presence and abilities. They are irreplaceable." When she's not crocheting or writing, Rachael (pictured here with her prosthetist Brittney McMinn and community care coordinator?Mika Tyhurst, MSW) loves spending time with her family and grandson. She hopes that her story will show others who face health challenges that it's important to be brave. Thank you to all of our caring clinicians and staff who have helped Rachael along the way! #EmpoweredCareers

In honor of Native American Heritage Month, we're proud to highlight Lisa Benallie, an office administrator at the Farmington, NM #HangerClinic. Sharing a special message in her native language, Lisa writes: "Yá’át’ééh shik’éí dóó shidine’é, Lisa Benallie yinishyé. Táchii'nii Nishlí Bit'ahnii bashishchiin Ma'ii Deeshgiizhinii dashicheii Hashk’?? hadzohí dashinalí ákót’éego diné asdzáán nish???. Ahéhee." ? Translation:?Greetings my relatives and my people. My name is Lisa Benallie. I am of the Red Running Into the Water People clan. I am born for the Within His Cover clan. My maternal grandfathers are of the Coyote Pass - Jemez Clan. My paternal grandfathers are of the Yucca Fruit Strung Out In A Line Clan. That is how I am a Diné Woman. ? Lisa is enrolled in the Navajo Nation, and lives in a reservation border town in New Mexico. Her roots, however, are located in Tolikan, also known as Sweetwater, AZ. A mother of four, she teaches her children to be proud of their Diné heritage on a daily basis. ? When asked what she wants people to know about her Native American heritage, Lisa says she remains dedicated to embracing her upbringing. “In my parents’ and grandparents’ generation, I heard stories about how they were told to leave their traditional ways, to stop speaking their language, and forced to walk far away from their homelands,” says Lisa. “But now, we have been given the opportunity to show the world we are a diverse culture, rich in tradition, and that we are still here.” ? Thank you, Lisa,?for?sharing your history with us. #EmpoweredCareers

Richard "Rich" Baruth, 67, lost his left leg below the knee in 2022 after several revision surgeries from a toe infection that was complicated by diabetes. Two years later, his right leg was amputated above the knee due to ongoing challenges from his condition. A patient at the Worcester, MA #HangerClinic location, Rich works with prosthetist Emily DiRuzza. Rich had a unique vision in mind for his prosthetic sockets, and Emily—who loves creating artwork in her spare time—was thrilled to make Rich’s wishes come to life! Her custom artwork is laminated onto both of Rich's sockets. “Someone once said this field is the perfect blend of healthcare, physical science and art, and I love when we get to showcase that blend to give the patient exactly what they want and need to achieve their goals,” Emily shared. Rich recently joined Hanger's AMPOWER peer mentoring program, where he provides support to patients facing similar challenges. With Emily's help, he's back to enjoying his hobbies—including working out at the gym and golfing. Kudos to our incredible clinicians like Emily who go the extra mile to help our patients! #EmpoweredCareers #WorldDiabetesDay
