Solene and Cordelia love to sing, play, and spend time with their older sister Aurora. The girls were both born with an ultra-rare genetic disorder called Congenital Titinopathy. The disorder is caused by a mutation in the gene which encodes titin—a massive protein essential for muscle function—and can cause a range of neuromuscular disorders. Clinician Kaitlin Cash at the Tallahassee, FL #HangerClinic, has provided care for 3-year-old Solene and 20-month-old Cordelia for the past two years, fitting them with ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) and supramalleolar orthoses (SMOs) to support their feet and ankles?as their muscles strengthen and they build up mobility. "Kaitlin and the Hanger Clinic?team?have been such a huge part of our success," shared the girls' mom, Annelise. "She has seen my girls grow and get stronger, and her knowledge helps me feel at ease—and the girls feel it too!" Annelise hopes her daughters will be defined by what they can do instead of what they can't.?We couldn't agree more, and we're happy we get to be a part of Solene and Cordelia's amazing story. #RareDiseaseDay?#EmpoweredCareers

Sergio Cotzal, supervisor of fabrication at the Hanger Fabrication Network in Orlando, FL, recently volunteered to present at his children's school for Career Day and got more than he bargained for—in the best way! He arrived with sample braces for the 2nd graders to inspect, as well as a presentation of some innovative #OandP devices. The students had a blast taking turns trying on the braces. When the principal caught a glimpse of the presentation, he asked if Sergio would also present to the 3rd through 8th grade classes. Sergio assumed that the older kids might be less interested in the material, but he was happily mistaken when the students eagerly asked questions and expressed interest in a similar career. “What was supposed to be a 30-minute presentation turned into an entire day,” Sergio shared. “Sometimes we feel like we’re just making a device, but in reality, we’re helping lives and changing lives. We do not realize how much of an impact we can make all around us.” #EmpoweredCareers

Scheels (Tulsa, OK) recently teamed up with #HangerClinic clinician Nolan Wilson to create a powerful opportunity for community representation. Thanks to Nolan, Scheels' assistant store leader Laura Vanbebber, and a generous donation from Fillauer Companies, two storefront mannequins now wear prosthetic devices! To celebrate this empowering moment, the Tulsa Hanger team, along with three local patients (Jonah, Rebecca and Todd), joined together at Scheels earlier this week for the unveiling, highlighting the importance of inclusion and the strength and resilience of the limb loss and limb difference community. The team is excited to see this project come to life and hopes to continue working with Scheels to fit other types of devices and disabilities in the future! #EmpoweredCareers Photo cred: #Scheels / Anagraciela Lara

As we reflect on the significance of #BlackHistoryMonth, we're celebrating the story and contributions of Hanger’s own Natheodore Ashmon (Theo), Sr., Senior Manager of Distribution Operations in Alpharetta, GA. Theo credits this month as a time to reflect upon the challenges of Black people, past and present, and to seek to understand what is not recorded in history that highlights the richness of Black heritage. He says it is his own heritage and his own family members that inspire him: his father, who led efforts to build roads in rural areas of Tifton, GA, where the county eventually named a road in his honor; and his uncle, who became Montezuma, GA’s first Black mayor in the town’s 150-year history. When asked what he wishes more people knew or acknowledged about Black History Month, Theo says it’s the countless initiatives and movements pioneered by African Americans that we should all be proud of. “It’s not just a ‘wish,’” he states. “It’s necessary to understand the complete picture of our shared history.”?
