Construction crews recently installed a crane inside the Vit Plant’s High-Level Waste Facility. The crane is the 12th piece of equipment lowered through the roof using the site’s tower crane this year, following previous installations of shield doors and other cranes. As the weather starts to change at Hanford, our jobsite crews at the Vit Plant are tackling key winterization projects like updating drainage systems to prevent ice and slippery surfaces. These efforts help keep our staff safe and everything running smoothly throughout the winter months. This effort aims to help the Tri-Cities community rediscover its river shores and works to emphasize restoration, development, and enhancement activities. It was a great day last week at Washington State University Tri-Cities for the Cougs Who Brunch Scholarship Recognition event. Student Mia Mendez was awarded one of two WSU Tri-Cities Scholars Excellence scholarships sponsored by Bechtel Corporation. Mia is majoring in Environmental Science and hopes to follow in the footsteps of her parents who work out at the Hanford Site. Congratulations, Mia, on your exemplary academic record! In early October, Vit Plant Safety teams hosted their annual Safety Expo and Heavy Equipment Expo (HEXPO). Staff from the jobsite and in town were able to explore safety-themed booths, participate in themed activities, and learn more about the various aspects our Safety teams cover across the project. There was also the unique opportunity to have an up-close, safe look at heavy equipment and machinery used at the jobsite. Fleet operators and safety specialists were on hand to speak with our staff to explain hazards such as blind spots and provide guidance on how to be safe around the equipment.
