This is a crucial step toward treating homelessness with the compassion and dignity it deserves. Our Weekend Backpack Nutrition Program is proud to serve over 220 students across Hartford.?This program plays a crucial role in supporting our community, where 78.5% of Hartford students are eligible for free or reduced-price meals—far higher than the statewide average of 44% (As reported in CSDE's District Profile & Performance Report, 2023-2024). These statistics represent more than just food—they embody hope, security, and the belief that no child should go hungry. For many students, school meals are a vital lifeline, providing the nutrition needed to learn, grow, and succeed. Our Backpack Nutrition Program ensures these students have access to meals over the weekend, allowing them to return to school on Monday nourished and ready to learn. The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is essential to students' ability to focus, engage, and achieve in the classroom. Without the NSLP and Backpack Nutrition Programs, many children would face greater barriers to success in the classroom.

Yesterday, Stephanie Boyce, Director of Homeless Prevention, Outreach, and Food Access, and Dawn Tyson, Outreach Coordinator, attended the inaugural "End Homelessness Caucus" press conference. As homelessness rates continue to rise in Connecticut, the efforts of nonprofit organizations play a vital role in saving lives. It is essential that we maintain strong advocacy for prevention, crisis response, and housing solutions. Additionally, we recognize the importance of ensuring that programs across the state are adequately funded and that frontline staff are compensated with living wages.
