Today, HHF and BUILD CDC teamed up with the dynamic duo Kit and Tad from Harvest912 to participate in Erie's annual Point in Time (PIT) Count. This effort assesses the number of people experiencing homelessness in our community and has revealed concerning increases in recent years. While many organizations banded together for the PIT Count, we focused on reaching remote encampments around the city, making contact and providing critical resources. This morning, we had the opportunity to recognize Michael Podskalny with a Guardian Angel award. Michael is a PCT with UPMC Hamot's Float Pool. He was recognized by a local patient for the exceptional care he provided. Way to go, Michael! The Guardian Angel distinction is a great honor for caregivers at UPMC Hamot. We couldn't agree more! A huge thank you and shout out to the staff at UPMC Hamot. Your dedication, teamwork, resourcefulness, and unflinching bravery during this historic snowstorm deserves mountains of recognition and applause.
I want to commend our extraordinary team at UPMC Hamot for their resolve and resilience during the recent record-breaking snowstorm in Erie. Your commitment to our mission of care has been nothing short of inspiring. As many of you know, Erie experienced unprecedented lake-effect snowfall in recent days, shuttering interstates, schools, and businesses. In some areas, snowfall totaled more than 6 feet and much of Erie County remains under winter weather alerts. Amid these extreme conditions, our team at UPMC rose to the occasion, ensuring that essential hospital services continued uninterrupted. The importance of this work cannot be overstated. When patients need them, they are ready. More than 70 employees stayed overnight Friday or Saturday at the hospital.?This included team members from a range of disciplines and departments, all coming together to serve those who depend on us. Our buildings and grounds crews worked tirelessly to keep the hospital accessible, clearing roads, sidewalks, and parking lots under relentless snowfall. The dietary team went above and beyond, staying on?extra hours to ensure food was available for patients and staff. Some staff members even braved the weather to pick up colleagues stranded at home, ensuring they could make it to the hospital. This is a stellar effort by all involved. The team at UPMC Hamot continues to place the needs of their patients and community above their own. Thank you to everyone going above and beyond during this challenging time.??
