Alexa, can you turn on the lights? Silence... Voice agents experience silent failures. I completely tanked my interview with FutureAdvisor in 2013. But Jon Xu and Bo Lu gave me a shot to prove myself. I worked hard, learned a lot, and brought a do-whatever-it-takes attitude. University of Waterloo trains you to grind. That mentality carried us to Y Combinator, where Jon Xu mentored us during the summer batch. Sometimes, life comes full circle. Jon Xu has inspired me to open doors for others just like he did for me!

2025 Prediction: Companies pursuing AI Voice will become bigger than text. This was a closed secret in 2024, but now it's an open secret. Lots of application layer companies leaning heavily into AI Voice are scaling very, very quickly. Reliability remains the #1 challenge for all teams.

UX Improvement Alert: It's much easier now to create health checks where Hamming AI agent periodically calls your voice agent in production and sends alerts to Slack when we detect regressions.

I enjoyed my chat with Demetrios Brinkmann and the Deepgram team on how Hamming AI is building the future of reliable voice agents. I talked about my time at University of Waterloo and how the pressure cooker environment prints ambitious people who start companies - like me, Martin Kess, Mark Wai, Sisun Lee, Praveen Arichandran, etc. I shared how the original idea for Hamming AI was inspired by our time at Tesla, Citizen, and Anduril Industries. No enterprise wants to have a PR chatbot-is-hallucinating nightmare like Air Canada. Many of our customers are growing 50% month-over-month, and we're excited to help them grow even faster. Conversational voice agents were a niche in 2024 and will be mainstream in 2025. Predictions: - Real-time voice or other end-to-end voice native models will finally become mainstream - Consumer expectations for voice agents will increase - Voice is like the mobile gold rush.
