“It’s not uncommon these days for an art exhibit to contain a warning for content or physical sensitivities like light and sound, but the work that greets you at the entrance of Misha Ilin’s exhibit “Pale Grass Blue” at Hamiltonian Artists actually is itself a warning. Though there’s definitely a postapocalyptic sensation from the nuclear allusions and the otherworldly blue glow cast over the gallery, the exhibit explores catastrophes both real and metaphorical as well as hyperobjects, or concepts that are so large and unwieldy that they’re difficult to comprehend but inextricable from our reality, like black holes or climate change. While the underpinning concepts are metaphysical, the artworks themselves are strengthened by their materiality.” - Washington City Paper Stephanie Rudig “Pale Grass Blue” runs through Dec. 7 at Hamiltonian Artists, 1353 U St. NW Please note that the gallery is closed for Thanksgiving and will reopen on Dec 5. . https://lnkd.in/eQv723Ww

In response to philosopher Timothy Morton’s theoretical assertion of the hyperobject, Pale Grass Blue slips into the void. The exhibition includes a suite of new installations, found objects, video, directives, and other textual elements. Using both natural and artificial materials, such as drywall, floodlights, spray paint, clay, sand, and joint compound, Ilin immerses visitors in a surreal, shimmering landscape that reflects a sort of porosity. Hamiltonian Artists is pleased to present Misha Ilin’s solo exhibition Pale Grass Blue. Ilin’s latest body of work asserts that ecocide, wars, body politics, and capital each exist as a sort of radioactive event, altering and reshaping the genome of what we term reality. As these normalized, so-called actions seep toxins into the fabric of the socio-political environment and geographical landscapes, things become increasingly blurry, hazy, and loopy. Hamiltonian Artists is excited to announce the new cohort of Hamiltonian Fellows for 2024–2026: Sobia Ahmad, June Canedo de Souza, Jermaine Carter, Nilou Kazemzadeh, and Fargo Nissim Tbakhi. The cohort was selected for their commitment to artistic excellence, growth potential, and alignment with Hamiltonian Artists’ value of community, by a panel of independent jurors: Amara Antilla, independent curator, Washington DC; Alyssa Mattocks, former director at Deli Gallery, New York; Julia Bloom, artist, director, and curator of Freight Gallery, Washington, DC; Luis Vasquez La Roche, artist and educator at George Mason University, Fairfax, VA; and Joey Enríquez, artist, designer, educator, and Hamiltonian Artists fellowship alum. Hamiltonian Artists fellows work to develop a single major project over the two-year program with guidance provided by mentors, Hamiltonian staff, peers, and other professional guests. Hamiltonian Artists provides expertise and resources to frame development from project idea to exhibition. Together, we help define the future of the field while providing the skills, knowledge, and resources to ensure the sustainability of independent artists as art professionals in their communities. Stephanie Kimou presents: The Colonizer’s Trash Thursday, October 10th, 6-8 pm What’s mine and what's not? Kimou releases The Colonizer’s Trash zine with an evening of experimental performance and collective reflection. RSVP - https://lnkd.in/e-6P7PHP Artist and scholar Stephanie Kimou presents The Colonizer’s Trash, her debut performance-lecture and social practice activation. Here, Kimou visions an expanded definition of trash—one that considers mindsets, ideologies, and material excesses rooted in colonial legacies such as anti-Blackness and exploitation. In alignment with Kimou’s broader practices which contend with the toxic residues of colonialism, this emergent work invites participants to take stock: what’s mine and what is not? RSVP is recommended due to limited capacity. Attendees may bring small items that symbolize colonial paradigms they seek to release and trash. During this activation, attendees' trash will be gathered, categorized, repurposed, and/or discarded. This program was selected from Hamiltonian Artists open call, which invites artists, organizers, and cultural workers to present professional presentations in our U Street gallery space. To learn more about hosting your concept with us, please visit our website.

On October 5th, join us at 7 pm in the rehearsal hall at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company for a special pre-show conversation facilitated by Anisa Olufemi, Fellowship Manager and Curator at Hamiltonian Artists! We’ll be exploring what it means to be an artist from DMV with Woolly Company Member Shannon Dorsey, and cross-disciplinary artist Sydney Vernon. Drawing upon The Commupance’s themes of coming-of-age nostalgia and homecoming, the two will discuss how growing up in the area led them to their chosen artforms, and the ways their approaches to creative expression and storytelling reflect their local roots. https://lnkd.in/eZZy5WF4
