When we talk about storm preparedness, we know a thing or two because we've experienced a thing or two, including the Great Blizzard of 1888. The storm shut down the East Coast from the Chesapeake Bay into parts of Maine. It lasted around 36 hours and covered New York City with over 40 inches of snow! The storm was so severe that the New York Stock Exchange was closed for two days. A full two-day weather-related closure wouldn't occur again until Hurricane Sandy in 2012!
