Optum RX's "independent pharmacy network" sounds good. But it's nothing more than a smokescreen to distract everyone. The only way this happens is if plans decide they're willing to pay EVEN MORE so the independents can get a slightly higher reimbursement. The San Francisco Standard the quiet part out loud. It's patients who really suffer when pharmacies focus on prescription numbers instead of patients. Recently, KFF Health News highlighted the general chaos that is most employers trying to understand their prescription benefits. It's no fault of the payers, though.
