The municipality is teaming up with Saint Mary's University and the Ecology Action Centre this spring to launch Living Lakeshores, a project that aims to protect freshwater shorelines in the Halifax region. As part of the initiative, we're inviting residents to enrol in free Level 1 training sessions and gain hands-on skills in shoreline naturalization. After completing training for Level 1, you'll be invited to level up and take part in Level 2 training! The first sessions will be happening on March 29 and May 2. We only have space for 20 people, so please register today! Head over to halifax.ca/biodiversity to find out why education is such a huge part of Living Lakeshores.

Join the movement for gender equality this International Women’s Day on March 8 to help #AccelerateAction. At the current rate of progress, it will take until 2158 to reach full gender parity. That is nearly five generations from now. This year’s theme, Accelerate Action, highlights the urgency of breaking down systemic barriers and biases that women face in both personal and professional spheres. It calls for swift, meaningful steps toward gender equality and challenges us all to create momentum for lasting change. Locally, progress continues. In 2024, a predominantly female Council was elected, marking a significant milestone in women’s leadership in municipal politics. You can view the full history of women in municipal politics here: https://brnw.ch/21wR867 The municipality is also engaging with diverse community members to develop the Women and Gender Equity Strategy: https://brnw.ch/21wR866 To celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of women, girls, gender-diverse and non-binary people, you are invited to the International Women's Day flag raising event on March 7, 2025 from 9 to 9:30 a.m. at Grand Parade, City Hall, with Mayor Andy Fillmore.

Are you part of a youth-led or youth-serving organization in the municipality? Do you have innovative ideas about how we can address climate change? Then, you're invited to apply for financial support from the Youth Climate Action Fund! The?Youth Climate Action Fund (YCAF)?gives financial support to young innovators who have creative ideas about how to tackle climate change at the local level. The municipality was one of 90 cities to receive $140,000 from Bloomberg Philanthropies and United Cities and Local Governments as part of the YCAF program. As part of this initiative, municipalities received funding to give out to youth-led groups through small grants. These grants range from $1400-7000 CAD and will be distributed through a partnership with the Halifax Climate Investment, Innovation and Impact (HCi3) Fund. We are thrilled to have this opportunity to recognize the innovation and resourcefulness of our young residents in the face of the climate crisis. Join the global movement for local, community-based climate action. The application deadline is March 31,2025! For more details and to apply, visit https://brnw.ch/21wR7Qs.
