Getting to the finish line tired and with an empty barn. We talk a lot about uncovering God’s calling for us and living on mission. Recently, I heard someone say his goal is to get to the finish line tired. Wow. I love this so much. What if we focus on life that way—figuring out God’s calling in our life, living it out each and every day, and then getting to the finish line tired from having done this? If you are like me, one of the first thoughts is “what if this means I need to drop it all and move to Africa?” Well, maybe that is what it means. But maybe it is more likely that God has provided you with skills and experiences in the life you are currently living (including where you are living it) to change some things and live it out differently right where you are. Interesting, right? What about stuff? As we build our lives and careers and families, we accumulate more and more stuff. Literally and figuratively. And we need to put this stuff somewhere, so we fill our barns and then build bigger barns. What if we focus on getting to the finish line with an empty barn? We are told that treasure does not belong to us and that we are supposed to be stewards of it on earth. In my heart, I know this is true. But my head begs to differ. This past month, a few things have really got me thinking about this topic. I listened to the book Faith Driven Investor. I interviewed Jeff Thomas, founder of Arkos Global and author of Trading Up, Moving from Success to Signifance on Wall Street. I co-spoke with Russ Crosson, CMO of Ronald Blue Trust and author of Leverage, Using Temporal Wealth for Eternal Gain. Oh, and there is an article in today’s WSJ on how giving makes you feel better.
