Integrated Resource Plans (#IRPs) are like a utility’s long-term roadmap. And rate cases are legal proceedings where the utilities negotiates with the public on what price they should get to charge for providing #electricity Good bet there’s probably some pretty valuable information contained within them, right? Especially if you’re looking to sell into a utility, or partner with one to build out some new generation. But only some states have them publicly available. And even then, they’re published inconsistently. And even then, they’re really, really hard to read. Our very own Sam Steyer breaks down the problem and the opportunity in our latest “Unlocking the Secrets of Utility Filings (pt 1).” We’ll be back next week with some examples of how we’re helping make this information more accessible and valuable - check it out ??

Utility filings are so deeply valuable for clean energy development and also... a bit painful to read. In this week's Halcyon blog post, I share some ways that climatetech companies can gain huge benefits from the two essential filings for intestor-owned utilities: ? Integrated Resource Plans and Rate Cases. ? At the end of the post, I begin to explore how you can work with a Large Language Model co-reader to get maximum useful information from these filings with minimum pain. There's more to come on that in Part II, next week! (Heartfelt thank you to Sharon Reishus, who has much, much more knowledge than I do on this topic, for editing.) https://lnkd.in/gQrAiZg8

Finding #PMF is a grind. Beyond the destination itself, one of the most important decisions you'll make is who you invite along with you on the journey. Peter Nocchiero has been an incredible partner for us on ours. If you're an early stage climate company, you need to check this out ??

    supporting climate founders

When you’re in the trenches building, amazing things reveal themselves that you could never have foreseen at the outset.??? Life imitates art and all that. I have been hard at work creating a product/market fit course for climate software startups and along the way I found an incredible launch partner in Koray Parmaks from Carbon Zero Capital. ?? Koray, a Founder/CEO turned investor, and his partner Eric Tong, are putting $ from their exits into climate startups.?? Together, we are offering an invite-only bootcamp to help selected founders gain conviction on the path to Strong PMF.??♀??? ??At the end of the bootcamp, Carbon Zero Capital will make investments in bootcamp grads that meet their PMF criteria.?? Yes, for real. Our PMF bootcamp helps early stage stage climate founders hit their next milestones??: -> Progress $0-500k, $500k-3M ARR -> Increase % customers that truly love your product -> Patch your leaky bucket (funnel) -> Right-size your unit economics -> Raise your next round If you want to join the bootcamp or learn more, request access at https://lnkd.in/g3yrQQvi !!??

Let's face it - events and conferences are exhausting. Keeping track of your own meetings and commitments is oftentimes more than just a one-person job ?? . And keeping up with all the news, announcements, partnerships, commitments, and conversations of note that happen at the global powerhouse that is #climateweeknyc? Basically impossible. But not for an #LLM. Check out Nat Bullard's latest, "An LLM Goes to Climate Week" below ?? https://lnkd.in/gvev7tJq

Deep decarbonization and the business of climate

The One Where a Large Language Model Goes to Climate Week. Last week I (along with many thousands of you on LinkedIn) was in New York City for Climate Week. I've been attending for more than a decade, since it was a side show of the UN General Assembly. These days, it can feel like the main show, particularly for those working in energy and decarbonization. Any human attending the hundreds of separate events runs into the limits of time and space. It's impossible for any person to see more than a small fraction of the available talks, and see any but a tiny quantum of fellow travelers in town. We all operate in edit moment, and it can be frustrating to know what you're missing. But - this sort of scale is not a problem for a large language model. So, we sent one (so to speak) to Climate Week, and I wrote about it. Click through to see a bit of what I asked Halcyon to help me discover, and what I learned. Happy reading. https://lnkd.in/gexyqbkH

Deep decarbonization and the business of climate

It's Climate Week in New York City. I've been coming here since it was an eye-glimmer, really, one of the many events organized alongside the United Nations General Assembly. Something to visit in between UN sessions, or after the Clinton Global Initiative (remember that?). These days, I know far more people who attend Climate Week for what it has become, and drop by a UN event on the side. It's a full, stuffed week of meetings, public and private, large and small, and a concentrated chance to see the people I need to (and want to) see in climate and decarbonization. I'll be all over the place, but you can find me tomorrow at Terrascope's event at The Nest Climate Campus along with Maya Hari, Felipe Daguila, Claire Perry O'Neill, and Nicolette Bartlett. So many other people and institutions I look forward to seeing: Andrew Beebe, Obvious Ventures, Congruent Ventures, Innovation Endeavors, The Westly Group, Sierra Peterson, Sarah Sclarsic, Voyager Ventures, Daniel Firger, Charles Hua, Carlotta Saporito, Abe Tarapani, Lee Carter and many more. #climateweeknyc https://lnkd.in/gzZ7pBU3

There is a lot of concern about how much energy demand that #AI and the data centers that support it will put on the world's electrical grids. Not nearly as pronounced: public consternation about grid stress from electric vehicle power demand. Should we be worried? ?? Check out our own Sam Steyer's latest writing for Machine Readable, "Demand Uncertainties", and let us know what you think! ??

    查看Sam Steyer的档案,图片

    Head of Data Science, Halcyon

Most people in Energy World agree that electricity demand is going way up, and we'd better build clean energy and transmission infrastructure fast, or disaster awaits. The number one driver of this growing demand: data centers. But what about the other fast-growing, 21st-century technology that uses a lot of power, EVs? Their electricity use is growing just as fast, yet they rarely receive the same scrutiny. In our latest blog post,?we use Halcyon to dive into the numbers, comparing the future impact of data centers vs. EVs on the grid: https://lnkd.in/gidxBYWV Check it out! If it resonates, let us know: - Do our future-looking numbers align with your predictions? - Are there other electricity drivers we should include alongside data centers and EVs? - How do you see data center vs. EV load growth affecting the grid differently? And what does that mean for your business? We want to have the conversation! And if you'd like to try a product that brings numbers and quotes to any energy question like this, let's talk. (Thanks to Jeff Fisher and Nat Bullard for editing and co-authorship.) The link, again: https://lnkd.in/gidxBYWV

We think a lot about the best way to improve the information discovery experience for the professionals wading through troves of #energy transition data. The floating cursor in a blank input field is a double-edged sword. Yes, it gives us flexibility to ask questions in our words, but with that flexibility comes many opportunities for detours or missed turns that we don’t always want to take. Nat Bullard's latest, “Constrain Yourself,” argues for ? quality ? within quantity, and examines how the connections between disparate pieces of information can bring more value than the information itself. Check it out ??

Deep decarbonization and the business of climate

When Bruce and I first discussed what Halcyon might become, he asked me "what information do you want?". I responded, "I want all of it". The answer was not really meant to be flip. It is our goal to ingest, format, de-duplicate, tag and format every iota of information that helps you make better energy transition and decarbonization decisions. But, you don't start with everything, and neither are we. Building a giant information catalog - and making sure it is useful! - is a rigorous process with a lot of controls. It is clean, it is limited, and it requires trusted sources as well as a trusted platform to integrate that information. Our founding engineer Alexander Huras calls this "narrowing the map". To put it another way: people want information, not the Internet. Building capability paradoxically means working within constraints, constraints that make a product, and a platform, stronger.
