In this training, students learn to develop an exquisite sensitivity and attunement to others, and to convey this understanding. This empathy and responsiveness helps to create a deep sense of safety and connection, and facilitates the effectiveness of the therapy. The self-development of the therapist coupled with Hakomi’s highly innovative techniques, form the core of the training. Using non-dualistic principles of mindfulness and gentle, open curiosity, the Hakomi therapist creates an atmosphere of safety for deep and sophisticated processing. This helps the client yield their defences safely and willingly to be examined, re-evaluated and transformed into more functional choices and behaviors. The relief, increased self-awareness and freedom provides the client with a sense of personal empowerment, choice, and a richer appreciation for life. Hakomi is a comprehensive and effective method of psychotherapy based in mindfulness and somatic awareness. Employing a strong experiential orientation, Hakomi is grounded in time-honored principles and the therapeutic embodiment of Loving Presence. Through attuned and mindful exploration of present experience, Hakomi supports the discovery and transformation of the unconsciously held core material that shapes people’s beliefs and behaviors. The Hakomi Professional Skills Training offers a thorough grounding in the theories and techniques of Hakomi Mindful Somatic Psychotherapy. This professional program provides students with a deep understanding of Hakomi’s foundational principles and the ability to work within them and with an attitude of Loving Presence. This training is for both new and established practitioners with a passion and dedication for somatics and mindfulness. In Level 1 of the Professional Skills series, therapists are offered practices that enhance presence and support deep relational attunement. You’ll learn the stages and flow of the Hakomi method with in-depth coverage of Hakomi theory and specific experiential techniques that bring the method to life. The goals of the Training are to provide students with: a deep understanding of the principles of the Hakomi Method and the ability to work within them, an understanding of the essentialness of Loving Presenceand skills and practices to deepen the capacity for relational presence an understanding of the Hakomi therapeutic process and the ability to use these precisely and appropriately. Our Level 1 training will be in a hybrid format (10 live-online meetings with a 5-day on the ground intensive in the Portland, Oregon metro area and self-paced homestudy. Brief online video talks and demonstrations are brought to life in our interactive, experiential training weekends.). The Comprehensive Hakomi Therapist Training offers students a substantial education on the Hakomi Method in a format that supports their personal growth on many levels. The Tenets of mindfulness combined with a regular practice shift the student’s understanding of psychotherapy and how to “be” as a therapist. Our views on transformation, the relationship, consciousness, and narcissistic wounding are not just theoretical underpinnings of our mindful approach. They are at the core of what it means to guide others in full-human beingness. The Foundation Module teaches helping professionals how to embody the spirit and attitude of the Hakomi principles. What will you learn? In this first year of training students will develop the main qualities of a Hakomi therapist by: Learning to embody the Hakomi principles to support deep inner work. Applying mindfulness in a dyadic and exploratory way. Recognizing how the body stores implicit memories and reflects core beliefs. Being able to enter a state of “Loving Presence” to gain the cooperation of the client’s unconscious. Developing Hakomi-specific communication skills to “manage consciousness” and explore intrapersonal processes Faculty: Halko Weiss – Ph.D., DBH, Dipl.-Psych., accredited Clinical Psychologist and lecturer on mindfulness, couples therapy, and body-centered psychotherapy Maci Daye – Certified Hakomi Trainer, Licensed Professional Counselor, and Certified Sex Therapist who lives in Hamburg and Mallorca Julia Corley – certified Hakomi Trainer, licensed clinical mental health counselor associate, a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, and a massage and bodywork therapist Valentina Iadeluca – Licensed Psychologist, certified Hakomi therapist and teacher, full member of Europeans Association of Body Psychotherapy, AISC and CBT Italia Pia Charpentier – Psychologist, Certified Hakomi Teacher in Training Learn more at hakomiinstitute.com #hakomi #therapy #somatics #somatic #mindfulness #psychotherapy #holistictherapy #somaticpsychotherapy #lovingpresence #professionaldevelopment #HakomiMethod #mentalhealth #trauma #traumarecovery #resilience #selfcare #selfhealing #attachment

The Central Role of the Body in Hakomi Psychotherapy: When the client focuses on the body in the present moment, unconscious material can surface into awareness. Implicit memory doesn’t feel like memory—it is perceived in the present. There will be images, memories, phrases, affect, behavior, impulses, and states of consciousness, all related to a theme. Each is tied in with particular somatic markers. As Hakomi Founder Ron Kurtz says, “Finding the meanings [bodily sensations] embody is an important part of changing them” (2004, p. 63). Touch one aspect of the package—use mindful attention and stay with the experience—and the rest will emerge into awareness. Often it is experiencing the somatic marker that is the doorway opening to awareness and change. This is a difficult process for some who want to have meaning before experience. Tony Crisp says, “[People] want to know in advance what is going to emerge, so they can edit it, change it, or make it socially acceptable” (1987, p. 26).” The good news for psychotherapy is that memory and brain structure are much more plastic than previously thought (Fuchs, 2004). We are constantly storing, activating, and restoring memories. Lynn Nadel (1994), a researcher on the function of the hippocampus, found that when a memory trace is activated, it is vulnerable for a short time and can be changed before it is recoded. Further research is confirming this finding (McCrone, 2003). This would affirm the importance of working in the here and now. The hippocampus can make a new memory, based on a different experience, this time putting it in context and time sequence. Sleep and dreams, along with neural communication between the left and right cerebral hemispheres, are thought to help turn the new memory into a permanent one (Siegel, 2003). The Hakomi method is a gentle yet powerful experiential psychotherapy that uses mindfulness and somatic interventions to support healing and growth. We are interested in how our clients organize their experiences in chronic and limiting ways. Through experiments and guided self-study, our therapists offer missing experiences to transform early imprints that block the fulfilment of our client's essential needs. How We Teach: Whole-Person Learning The first concern of the Hakomi faculty is to encourage our students to understand, embrace, and adhere to the Hakomi Principles, which Ron Kurtz described as the “theoretical underpinnings of the work.” This task requires a heartfelt, long-term commitment to personal and professional growth for participants. Toward that end, the curriculum incorporates kinesthetic, visual, and auditory teaching modalities that engage the body and mind of our students to support whole-person learning. Both in-person and virtual programs are dynamic and interactive, combining lectures with experiential activities, demonstrations, practice sessions, and inner exploration of how to “be” a therapist. Hakomi is part art and part science. We have a theoretical framework for understanding transformation, informed by neuroscience and general systems theory. We also have a delineated methodology that one can learn conceptually through lectures and books. However, to master the art of Hakomi, you must see the work demonstrated by a skilled practitioner, practice regularly and receive ongoing feedback. For this reason, our professional programs are highly experiential. In essence, the therapist’s task is to model compassion and understanding as we guide a client through their internal landscapes, learning how they were adaptive for life, no matter how much distress they may have also produced. We must recognize that all these landscapes—no matter how dangerous, strange, frightening, or sad—are always part of our common human geography, places we all find ourselves at one time or another. To long for intimacy, to pull away from people, to get needs met in self-destructive ways, to cover our hearts—these are the human experiences we all share. And for exploring these wilder shores of the self, we could take no more promising journey of discovery than in the vessel of our own mindful bodily awareness. That we as therapists have the opportunity to guide our clients on these journeys is a great and honorable privilege.
