关于我们
Haiti Outreach, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit NGO based in Minnesota in the U.S. and Pignon, Haiti, that works with communities in Haiti on a range of issues from water to education and other projects. Our vision is for Haiti to become a developed country, with abundant clean water, sanitation, food, medical care, infrastructure like roads and electricity, educational and job opportunities, for all. Unlike most NGO's operating in Haiti, we are not a relief organization. We are interested in long term, sustainable development. We help the communities and the government to build and sustain these projects, mostly clean water projects in rural areas where they drink contaminated river water, with our training program for management responsibility. We also include sanitation education in this training. We operate using a 4-point community development model for long term sustainability to ensure that the projects will last over a long period of time. ? The request for assistance comes from the community and not from us; we don’t tell them what they need; they tell us. ? They must organize, with our assistance, and participate in all levels of planning. ? The group responsible for the project must be a cross-section of the community, and the project must benefit the entire community. ? There must be an economically viable maintenance plan established and managed by the community. How are we different? Our work is based on a grassroots effort involving community responsibility, participation and ownership. This is unlike many well-intentioned “development” projects that lack this economic sustainability element and end up creating a dependency. We have 20 staff in Haiti, all but one of which are Haitian citizens. We currently have a small staff of 4 in the U.S. to fundraise and administer.

Today as we celebrate the strength and resilience of the Haitian revolutionaries, we must not forget about the challenges facing Haitian people today. In recent days, a little over 100 miles from Cap-Ha?tien, Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital, has experienced four tumultuous days of gang violence leaving 20,000 people displaced. But, just as the ancestors stood strong against oppression, we too can rise above the turmoil! Let us honor the past by coming together to foster peace, rebuild trust, and create a brighter future for all! ???? #Haiti #BattleOfVertières #Resilience #Hope

We are continuing our Board Spotlight series! Today we would like to highlight board member: Phil Haddad. Phil attended Albright College with Co-Founder and Country Director Neil Van Dine, but it wasn’t until the 2010 earthquake that he was compelled to advocate for Haiti. After reaching out to Neil and learning about our commitment to sustainability, he decided to contribute to our efforts directly. When we asked him what is special about the work that Haiti Outreach does, he mentioned our “secret sauce”, our commitment to coaching leaders in troubleshooting when issues arise and creating sustainable solutions, ultimately leading to a change in mindset. Phil exemplifies our commitment to retaining supporters. We know it’s common for supporters to face “support fatigue”, and that’s why Board Director Haddad’s nearly two decades of support means so much to us. Thank you Phil, for your many years of support and leadership!

Last week, our Executive director, Ceallaigh Smart, along with Communications & Philanthropy Coordinator, Mercy Akindemowo, and intern, Tanguy Lesegretain attended the 2024 Annual MINN Summit! The MINN Summit is an annual conference that provides a space for Minnesota’s international NGOs and supporters to have Important conversations surrounding international development, while learning, connecting, fostering and exchanging new ideas. Ceallaigh participated in a panel discussion with fellow executive directors, Elaine Tymchak, Peter Carlson, Nate Knatterud-Hubinger, Doug Niemela, and Katherine Wojtan. There, they provided insight on effective leadership, key challenges, and strategies for managing global organizations. Our team had a wonderful experience sharing Haiti Outreach’s mission and connecting with other advocates for change. Until next year!

A high performing board does not happen overnight. It involves careful planning, consideration, and commitment. We simply could not continue to do our sustainable development leadership work without the strong and diverse board that makes up Haiti Outreach. To express our gratitude, we’d like to highlight board member: Dionissi Aliprantis. Federal Reserve Economist, Dionissi Alipratis, first traveled to Haiti at the age of 18, returning home with a fascination for Haitian history. Being of Greek descent, Dionissi began to notice similarities between Greek and Haiti’s efforts of resistance and liberation. This brought him to the writings of Haitian revolutionary, Toussaint Louverture. Then, he realized, the fight for liberation and equality transcends nationality, race, and culture. “It doesn't matter that I am Greek and not Turkish, or that my kids are French and not Haitian–the Haitian Revolution represents the fight for beautiful ideals that we should all join.” Influenced by philosopher Leif Wenar and his views on effective altruism, Dionissi found himself in agreement with one specific idea of the social movement: a sense of urgency. Dionissi recognizes the urgency of Haiti’s situation, and the importance of converting our financial resources into real support. This notion draws a direct parallel to the work of Haiti Outreach; to our model of sustainable support. When we asked what brought him to Haiti Outreach, he expressed appreciation for the way we operate. He says, “Haiti Outreach is responding to the urgency of the moment in Haiti, but in a way that is based on solidarity before charity. Maximizing sustainability by working with Haitians to address their specific needs, rather than working on just on behalf of Haitians, for the advancement of Haiti." We are also so grateful for the wonderful research work he did highlighting our work, "What Is the Equity-Efficiency Tradeoff When Maintaining Wells in Rural Haiti?", published in the World Bank Economic Review here: https://loom.ly/3OYkhkc Mesi Anpil, Dionissi!
