What do I see that makes me say that? What more can I find? Lehrer was born with spina bifida and has undergone numerous surgeries throughout her life. In a 2021 interview, she reflected on her work portraying people “whose physical embodiment has long been stigmatized: “The longer I hung out with disabled people, and the longer I looked… I looked with interest and I saw beauty. It was scary at times. When I started doing portraits of disabled people, galleries would say, “Why are you doing this?” I got so much rejection. I've said recently that I finally defined what disability beauty is for me: when I'm with someone who has experienced extended stigma and inhabited a double consciousness, there's an intensity of presence that is just gorgeous. That's disability aesthetics. That's disability beauty. I'm really here. I know I'm being looked at, I know I'm being thought about, I know I'm being judged, I know their suspicions, and I'm going to take that and do something with it.” ?????? ?????????????????????? ?????? ???????? ???? ???????? ?????? ???????? ?????? ????????????????, moving us far beyond immediate impressions or judgments. What more can I find? In an interview, Liu Xiaodong said, “Everyone else jumped out from the frame. Everyone is in the front. I needed someone in the shadow. I thought it would be appropriate for me to be there. It’s saying, I’m observing them, painting them. And I should also paint myself into it, as we are all friends who grew up together. This could be a shared token.” Earlier he noted, “It is actually very difficult to paint these friends. Sometimes you think the resemblance is there, but inside my heart, it might feel different, so sometimes it’s very hard to paint. What more can I find? In an interview, ?????????? ?????????? described an aspiration in her painting: “I think that we are nourished by what is in flux. I sometimes aspire to make an image that is an elixir for a world that threatened to be static. Is it possible to make an image that can be in flux in that way, by having multiple ways of looking at the object, multiple ways in which things interact with each other?” Holding myriad points of view and welcoming the flux is also part of the VTS experience. Navigating a group of people into this space and embracing multiple ways of seeing and thinking is at the core of what we teach.
