What more can I find? In an interview, Liu Xiaodong said, “Everyone else jumped out from the frame. Everyone is in the front. I needed someone in the shadow. I thought it would be appropriate for me to be there. It’s saying, I’m observing them, painting them. And I should also paint myself into it, as we are all friends who grew up together. This could be a shared token.” Earlier he noted, “It is actually very difficult to paint these friends. Sometimes you think the resemblance is there, but inside my heart, it might feel different, so sometimes it’s very hard to paint. In many of his works, color usurps the role of the subject. Light, color, and atmosphere-shaped forms are the subjects we look at today.
