Do you know the history of Judge Michael E. Hancock? Judge Hancock was the first Black student to graduate from Gainesville (GA) High School. While working as an investigator for DeKalb Juvenile Court, his courthouse colleagues encouraged him to pursue law school. He graduated from Emory School of Law in 1978. After law school, he served for a year with VISTA (Volunteer in Service to America) assigned to the Atlanta Legal Aid Society's Senior Citizens Law Project. Judge Hancock was a trailblazer in the DeKalb County legal system. In 1979, he became DeKalb County's first African-American Public Defender and founded the DeKalb Lawyers Association. He became DeKalb County's first full-time Black judge, and served as chief judge of the DeKalb Recorders Court. In 1991 he was appointed to the DeKalb Superior Court bench by Governor Zell Miller becoming the first African-American judge to hold a seat. He held that position until he retired in 2012. Honorable Michael E. Hancock served for over 30 years just a few blocks away from our law firm and we've had the opportunity to bring cases before his court.
