16 Weeks in a row, 16 Hackathons completed, 16 All Nighters Pulled - An Unforgettable Journey
Over the past five months, I embarked on an incredible hackathon streak, participating in 16 hackathons across the United States, traveling nearly 3,000 miles from the west coast to the midwest and east coast. Despite juggling both a full time job and being a student, I committed every weekend to these hackathons and emerged victorious in 10! ??
My streak concluded at HackDavis (with 599 participants!), where my team won Best Use of Intel Developer Cloud and developed Doggo AI - an empathetic and interactive companion for children in hospitals worldwide. We worked tirelessly for 24 hours in a tiny study room, with Dylan Vu spending almost the entire hackathon sewing the Doggo plushy and working on hardware (we thank you for your sacrifice ??).
Our custom multithreaded solution for interruptible AI, built from the ground up within 24 hours, impressed the Intel judges, who recognized Doggo AI's potential to bring comfort to isolated children. Doggo AI converses in real-time, handling interruptions, end of turn detection, and additional context naturally, while also observing emotions to tailor its responses and provide appropriate support. This journey has not only helped me grow technically, but also taught me valuable lessons in teamwork, perseverance, and the power of innovation to make a real difference in people's lives. I am incredibly grateful for the friends who joined me on this hackathon adventure. Special shoutouts to Kevin Wu, Dylan Vu, Spike O'Carroll, Jasmine Wu, Jay Wu, Simon Quach, Elissa Yang, Michelle Feng, Daniel Kim, Hebe Huang, Akash Iyer - I couldn't have done it without you! And to those I couldn't mention here, please know that your support and camaraderie meant the world to me. ??
During this journey, I had the privilege of meeting some truly inspiring individuals. A heartfelt thank you to Ravin Kumar from Google, who sparked my fascination with Google's Gemma Models and its powerful fine-tuning capabilities, Ugonna Chikezie from Intel Corporation for showcasing the incredible potential of the Intel Developer Cloud for fine-tuning Large Language Models, and Allen H. for introducing me to TensorDock, a cloud GPU company I'm excited to explore further!
While it's bittersweet that this particular hackathon streak has come to an end, I'm filled with anticipation for the future. As one chapter closes, I'm already looking forward to the next, aiming for an even longer and more impactful hackathon streak in the coming year. ??
