Habitat for Humanity of South Central New Jersey is an independently chartered affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI), a nonprofit organization that seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Locally, Habitat SCNJ is on a mission to transform lives and our counties by building quality homes in partnership with families in need, and uniting all community members around the cause of affordable housing. Since 1987, Habitat SCNJ has empowered over 276 families to achieve their dreams of safe, affordable home ownership and break the cycle of poverty. Our homes are sold with zero-interest mortgages to local low-income families who contribute 400 hours of “sweat equity” toward Habitat projects. Mortgage principal payments are recycled back to build or renovate additional homes through our Fund for Humanity. In addition to soliciting public and private donations, capturing the enthusiasm of over 2500 volunteers a year, and utilizing the current housing stock, HFHSCNJ also operates a ReStore - a second hand retail outlet where new and gently used donations of furniture, building materials and home decor are resold to the public at a fraction of retail value, and all revenue goes directly into supporting Habitat SCNJ programs. All donations to the ReStore provide a free tax deductible pick up service; saving companies, labor costs, valuable floor space, significant dumpster costs, while saving the landfills and supporting a great mission. Community is at the heart of everything we do, which is why we partnered with Habitat for Humanity of South Central New Jersey to build another Benebone-sponsored home. This time, the project brought us to Trenton, NJ — a city close to our founders, Peter and Jim Toolan, and a community that holds special meaning for the Benebone team. We kicked off the day with an inspiring ceremony, reflecting on the importance of giving back to a place so close to our roots. With the help of our team and some dedicated Wishbone Club members, we spent the afternoon working on eight homes in the neighborhood. From painting and planting to yard cleanups, our goal was to bring a fresh touch to the area. The day wouldn’t be complete without a celebration, so we brought the community together for a Rock the Block party featuring food, music, bounce houses, face painting, and plenty of Benebones — all free to enjoy. It was a day filled with heart, and we’re honored to play a part in Trenton’s story. Thanks to Habitat for Humanity for the opportunity to give back and to everyone who joined us! Habitat SCNJ proudly welcomed Tynisa, a local resident, to her new home in Camden City during a heartfelt dedication ceremony last week that celebrated the power of community and collaboration. The event included congratulations and well wishes from Camden County Commissioner Virginia Betteridge, Legislative District 5 Assemblyman Bill Moen, and Jose Ramos from Camden City Schools. The construction of this home and the dedication ceremony are shining examples of what can be achieved through strong partnerships and a shared vision. This particular home was completed in collaboration with the Michaels Corporation, which generously provided labor and materials for a complete gut and rehabilitation. Thank you to all of our partners, supporters, and volunteers for making the dream of homeownership a reality for Tynisa!
