Inauguration Build 2024 by University of Notre Dame - University of Notre Dame Photo Essays (nd.edu) That's a wrap! What a great week we had with the University of Notre Dame. We hosted nearly 750 volunteers to help build five homes in the Near Northwest Neighborhood of South Bend. Five families will have a brand new, affordable, and energy-efficient home, and two will move in before the holidays. Our families and community partners are hard-working and dedicated to building strength, community, and hope with us. Together, we change lives! Today, our affiliate hosted a special Legislators Day, where we met federal and state legislators to discuss the impact of Habitat for Humanity and the crucial role of their partnership in our success. We discussed our financial model to make housing attainable for those who have been shut out of the market due to income and rising costs. Additionally, we informed legislators of the vital partnerships with the cities of Mishawaka and South Bend, which have partnered with Habitat for Humanity to help grow a thriving community. Legislators learned about the impact of Habitat for Humanity, both nationwide and statewide, and particularly here in St. Joseph County. Facing the complex issue of affordable homeownership, we believe in elevating the voices of those who experience the challenge firsthand. By listening to families in search of strength and stability in homeownership, we were proud to introduce Habitat for Humanity homeowner Precilla, who talked about the cost of living in an apartment and not being able to attain housing until she found Habitat. Precilla discussed Habitat homeownership's differences and impact on her and her daughter's life. The money she had saved and the equity she had built in her home set her and her daughter up for a brighter future. Precilla talked about her home and the community and friendships she has found in her neighbors. Precilla and her daughter have lived in their home for five years. Legislators appreciated the information and knowledge they gained and were thankful to hear firsthand from Precilla.
