Using the American Red Cross' Participatory Approach for Safe Shelter Awareness, or PASSA, Habitat for Humanity’s capacity building program in Puerto Rico helped support the development of a solar-powered energy hub. Our CEO Jonathan Reckford recently visited Habitat for Humanity India, celebrating with families during a handover ceremony of 15 climate-resilient homes that include features such as natural ventilation, solar rooftops, and rainwater harvesting systems. He also spent time with residents in Cheeta Camp, an informal settlement with over 100,000 residents in the heart of Mumbai, engaging with families and community leaders who shared their housing challenges, opportunities and aspirations for the future. #tbt #HomeEquals

In 2009, Central Berkshire Habitat for Humanity engaged residents and partners in Pittsfield, Massachusetts' Westside to jointly implement a holistic, community-centered?neighborhood revitalization?approach to spark changes in the community.?Here is just a sample of what the Habitat-led coalition has accomplished so far! ? Created a workforce development program that trains future homebuilders. ? Built more affordable, decent homes and encourage other affordable home developers to invest and build in the neighborhood. ? Improved public safety by expanding the hours that social workers are on call to support police calls. ? Developed new parks and improved existing parks. ? Successfully advocated for new, safe sidewalks. ? Created murals that reflect the residents’ vision for the future of their community. Cement bamboo frame technology is an innovative building method that Habitat for Humanity and the Hilti Foundation have been working together to scale in Nepal and the Philippines. The homes built using this technology are constructed with specially treated bamboo and cement plaster that makes them disaster-resilient and sustainable. To date, Habitat for Humanity Philippines has built 436 homes using this technology under the Negros Occidental Impact 2025 Project alone. We are delighted to share The Opportunities and Impact of Housing "edutainment" report: An evaluation of Tujenge: Build It Better, an education and entertainment show on affordable housing solutions that aired in Kenya in 2022. The evaluation was conducted by Habitat for Humanity International in partnership with Dalberg Research SEZ Limited between August 2023 and February 2024. ? ??? ?? This report explores the factors that contribute to the low adoption of affordable housing solutions, making it difficult for low-income households to own homes. Factors such as?income, competing expenses, transport costs, cost of financing, high cost of land and housing units, limited knowledge of a broad range of existing solutions, and the process of obtaining them, compounded by limited media content or programs focused on affordable housing solutions.?? ??? ?? The findings, as detailed in the report, provide an in-depth analysis of Tujenge: Build It Better, on building awareness, expanding knowledge, shifting attitudes, and motivating the uptake of affordable housing solutions among housing actors and low- and middle-income households in Kenya.
