Have you ever wondered what it's like to volunteer on our construction site? Before Gracie became our Home Repair Program Manager, she spent several months volunteering with our construction crew. Back then, she wrote about her experience on her personal blog, and we were lucky enough to have her share it with us! Check it out at hfhwhatcom.org/blog

Breaking Ground and Building Community Part 2: This Saturday, we had the official Groundbreaking Ceremony for the first four homes in our Mateo Meadows Community in Everson. It was a momentous occasion as we celebrated the start of this project that will bring 30 affordable homes to this community. We had a fantastic group of community members joining us, including the Honcoop family, two of our Partner Homebuyer Families, representatives from local businesses, many of our longtime volunteers, and members of the Nooksack Tribe who blessed the land in a beautiful ceremony. Wielding the golden shovels were Chris and Juan, who will one day call Mateo Meadows home, Emily, representing the Habitat Store that fuels our mission, and Jami representing First Fed, who granted us the first source of funding for this project. On the United Rentals excavator was Mateo Mattson's family friend Bruce, and Len Honcoop's grandson Lucas was on the Len Honcoop Gravel Company's excavator. Of course, volunteers and staff had to join in on the fun once the ground was officially "broken". Thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate this important step forward for Habitat for Humanity in Whatcom County and the future of affordable homeownership opportunities in our community.

Building Community and Breaking Ground part 1: This past Saturday was our annual Build Community Day and official Groundbreaking Ceremony at Mateo Meadows! We started the day with four projects in the Everson and Nooksack community. Teams of volunteers worked to clear weeds and invasive species at two homes and built handrails and exterior stairs at the other two homes. We are so grateful to all of these volunteers as well as the Whatcom Community Foundation's Project Neighborly Grant for allowing us to complete these projects at no cost to the homeowners. We want to thank Holly's Meat Pies, Master's Blend Coffee, Carl's Mower and Saw, Hardware Sales, and Green Earth Technology for making this productive morning possible. And thank you to everyone who joined us for this momentous day! We look forward to continuing to build community together in Whatcom County. Stay tuned for Groundbreaking photos!

You can often find Penny from VECA Electric & Technologies working hard on our build sites. And last week, she was training the next generation to do the same! Hardworking women like Penny and Ellie are not only helping us build affordable housing, they're changing the future of the industry! Their passion and drive for this work are an inspiration and reminder that the trades can be an empowering career for everyone. ??♀??? If you're interested in construction, there's a place for you on our build site! Volunteering with us is a great way to get some hands-on experience. Let's build a more inclusive and diverse future together!

The numbers are in: our amazing Habitat Whatcom volunteers put in a total of 2,284 hours in the month of June!! ?? This is the MOST volunteer hours we've ever had in a month since we started tracking them in our new volunteer software a few years ago. What an incredible accomplishment from our volunteer team! Each and every one of our volunteers - whether in the Habitat Store, the office, or on our construction sites - helps make a difference in the lives of Whatcom County families. Thank you all for everything you do.
