Metabolism doesn't slow down with age. In fact, there is no significant change in metabolic rate between the ages of 20 and 60. The most important factor determining metabolism isn't age, but the amount of muscle mass. Muscle mass decreases by 3-8% per decade after the age of 30 if you don't do anything to maintain it. The lower your muscle mass, the lower your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR).
BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) - It is the amount of energy (measured in calories) that your body uses at rest to maintain essential bodily functions such as breathing, circulation, temperature regulation, and cell production.
In other words, BMR is the minimum number of calories your body burns to function properly without engaging in physical activity.
When you lose muscle mass:
? You can become more insulin-resistant
? Your metabolic function can decline
And you might struggle with:
? Blood sugar regulation
? Fatigue
? Increased hunger
? Using stored energy (fat) as fuel
What should you do more?
Eat more protein and lift weights. This is the best way to prevent muscle loss and weight gain as you age and to set yourself up for success in the years to come.
