Last week, Harsh Sagar and I gave a presentation about our time at the United Nations COP16, back in October. It was great to teach Nottingham Trent University staff and students about COPs, the Convention on Biological Diversity, the amazing work of the Global Youth Biodiversity Network and to share our personal experience at the event. Revisiting the photos and stories from COP was nice although it was a reminder of how chaotic these events are, particularly relevant due to the recent COP16.2! Check out the work of GYBN UK (shameless plug) for more info on the CBD, COPs and biodiversity policy in the UK.

Hear from one of the GYBN delegates who attended COP16.2, about their experience and the result of the event! Global Youth Biodiversity Network UN Biodiversity

Policy Officer. Research Fellow. Trustee of Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust.

COP16.2 was under high pressure and had high stakes. During this three-day sprint to the end, there were triumphs, tears (happy ones!), compromises and long nights. Long-awaited agreements were made, including a permanent mechanism for biodiversity funding and an agreement on reporting templates for national biodiversity plans. COP16.2 was a success and made firm steps in the right direction. But, as always, there is more to do... ??? Implementation is key. Nearly three quarters of nations have not submitted their national biodiversity plans yet, despite being three months after the deadline. ?? Indigenous peoples, local communities, youth and women need a continued voice and presence in global biodiversity governance. ?? Multilateralism matters, now more than ever and especially in uncertain times. The resilience of collaboration between parties at COP16.2 was inspiring. ??? Climate and biodiversity are inter-linked. Biodiversity must be treated with the same urgency and financial backing as climate action. It was a privilege to represent the Global Youth Biodiversity Network in Rome. I will never forget the joy and ecstatic cheering of delegates when the gavel went down and agreements were reached.?I'm hopeful for a better future. GYBN UK

?? Here’s why we believe we have the right conditions to achieving the UK’s goal to protect 30% of land and sea for nature by 2030. 1?? We’re ready to unite ?? – 30x30 is nature’s equivalent of net-zero, a clear, tangible, and, crucially, a near-term target leading to action from Day 1. 2?? Sustainability has matured ?? – New frameworks and best-practices means businesses are moving from offsetting emissions to a contributions model, and bringing the impact they make closer to their customers and staff. 3?? Fresh energy is needed ?? – ESG fatigue is real, curtailing maketting cut-through. 30x30 offers an exciting and reputable way to engage. 4?? The public is ready for hope ?? – Political backsliding is a fertile moment for grassroots-driven movement, just like our first great wave in 2018-2020 when Brexit, Farage and Trump were first ascending. 5?? Defra’s new 30x30 standard is the final missing piece ?? – A credible certification is emerging, making it easier than ever for businesses to support nature. The UK is taking an international lead here, and its impact is not yet felt. Right now, it is hard to imagine such achieving such a goal. But, we have all the right conditions for something special indeed. ?? ~~~ #30x30 #30x30UK #NatureRecovery #Rewilding #Biodiversity #ClimateAction #ESG

Today is #WorldWildlifeDay. One million out of an estimated 8 million species of plants and animals globally are threatened with extinction, many within decades. The Global Biodiversity Framework, a milestone for efforts to halt and reverse biodiversity loss, is the only way forward. This year’s observance, organized by CITES, highlights how working together to finance wildlife conservation more effectively and sustainably and build a resilient future for both people and the planet. Let's take action # ForNature and invest in our planet—every action counts: https://wildlifeday.org/en
