On March 20, Panel One of the 2025 Shapiro Environmental Law Symposium at The George Washington University Law School will examine norms related to international environmental law and international human rights law that have been implicated in disputes between host states and foreign investors within the framework of investment arbitration (Investor-State Dispute Settlement). ? The panel will cover a range of critical topics, including the norms related to socioeconomic and cultural rights, the free, prior, and informed consent (FPIC) of indigenous peoples, the social license to operate, and the right to a healthy environment. It will also explore the tensions that arise between sovereign rights and private interests, analyzing the challenges of reconciling these competing priorities in investment arbitration. Shapiro Environmental Law Symposium. Professor Anaya is a leading expert in international human rights and indigenous peoples' issues. He holds the position of University Distinguished Professor and Nicholas Doman Professor of International Law at the University of Colorado. From May 2008 to June 2014, Professor Anaya served as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. ???
