A big congratulations and thank you to Dr. Mahmood Shivji, Director of the Guy Harvey Research Institute (GHRI) at Nova Southeastern University, and all of his lab staff on publishing their 175th?peer-reviewed scientific journal article. As the GHRI at NSU celebrates its 25th?anniversary, this landmark publication about the movement of scalloped bonnethead sharks off of the coast of Colombia is just the latest in a long track record of conducting cutting-edge fisheries research.? ? The GHRI at NSU’s pioneering research includes work on uncovering the impact of the global shark fin trade, revolutionary shark and billfish tracking, discovering “virgin birth” in sharks, identifying new species of billfish, and successfully decoding shark genomes for the first time ever. Long-running research programs like the GHRI at NSU are integral to better understanding long-lived animals like sharks and stingrays and helping to conserve sportfish for future generations. ? A satellite tag that was deployed on a dolphinfish offshore of Panama in May by the Dolphinfish Research Program and the Guy Harvey Foundation has recently detached and reported its data. A 40” female dolphinfish carried the tag for 158 days, covering an estimated 5,628 miles through the waters of Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, and Costa Rica, as well as two high seas areas in the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean. This track highlights the necessity for international cooperation managing fisheries in a region that faces intense commercial and illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing pressure.? ?
