The Supreme Court will soon rule in the case US v. Skrmetti and the decision could undermine essential trans health care for young people nationwide. Guttmacher data show that young people and LGBTQ people already face unique obstacles when seeking sexual and reproductive health care, including abortion. Many of these barriers, such as a lack of financial resources or transportation, extend to gender-affirming care as well. Young trans people deserve to have their health needs recognized and met. We must keep fighting to ensure access to essential care for all trans youth. Learn more from the ACLU: https://gu.tt/4iX53gM #TransVisibility #TransHealthCare #TransRights

On April 2, the US Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in a case challenging South Carolina’s efforts to block people enrolled in Medicaid from accessing health care at Planned Parenthood clinics. In our new analysis, Guttmacher Director for Federal Policy Amy Friedrich-Karnik highlights the vital role Planned Parenthood health centers play in providing reproductive health care and why this case is an attack on people with low incomes. • A speech bubble with a quote from Guttmacher Director of Federal Policy, Amy Friedrich-Karnik, that reads: “While anti-abortion advocates will try to frame this case in terms of withholding taxpayer dollars from abortion providers, the reality is that the South Carolina policy denies patients access to high-quality care from the providers they trust—all in the name of ideology.”

The newly confirmed FDA Commissioner has a history of sharing anti-abortion misinformation, and could use his role to erode access nationwide. As our Principal Federal Policy Advisor, Anna Bernstein explains: “Makary’s refusal to acknowledge the well-established safety of mifepristone, one of the two drugs used in a medication abortion regimen, during his confirmation hearing signals a willingness to prioritize political pressures over scientific evidence." While abortion data are critical for understanding changes in the abortion access landscape, it’s clear that in the increasingly hostile political and legal climate the benefits of state-mandated abortion reporting no longer outweigh the risks to patients and providers. In a new policy analysis, Guttmacher experts make the case for why states should end state-mandated abortion reporting and consider voluntary data collection methods instead. Fifteen years ago today, the Affordable Care Act was signed into law. Since then, it has improved the health and economic well-being of millions of people across the US in several ways. Major expansions to Medicaid under the ACA have dramatically reduced uninsured rates among women of reproductive age and increased access to sexual and reproductive health care. Medicaid's robust coverage of contraceptive care is vitally important for marginalized communities nationwide, including people living with low incomes, Black, Brown and other people of color and more. In addition, the ACA’s contraceptive coverage guarantee requires most private health insurance plans to cover the full range of contraceptive methods, services and counseling without out-of-pocket costs for patients. This has allowed millions of people to access their birth control method of choice, plan their families and protect their health and well-being! Learn more at the link in our bio. By expanding access to essential health care, both the contraceptive coverage guarantee and Medicaid have become crucial to reproductive autonomy. Policymakers must take action NOW to uphold the ACA and strengthen its protections. Learn more: https://gu.tt/4hJCyBO #AffordableCareAct #ProtectOurCare #ReproductiveHealth

  • All LGBTQ+ people deserve high-quality and affordable abortion care.?? Guttmacher data show that many LGBTQ+ individuals in the US seek and obtain abortions: As many as 16% of abortion patients don't identify as cisgender or heterosexual women.? But LGBTQ+ people face unique obstacles to abortion access. There are also widespread attacks on the health and rights of LGBTQ+ communities, including legislation targeting trans health care for young people.? Everyone should be able to get an abortion when they want or need it. We must break down the barriers that prevent LGBTQ+ people from getting the care they deserve.
