This is the last episode of AIA Austin Women in Architecture Women in Architecture Profiles Interview series for the year. I am grateful for the work I have been doing with my partner and collaborator, Alexandra Chaves, Assoc. AIA, NOMA. & AIA Austin for their continued support of my craft as a filmmaker. As a filmmaker, inspiration strikes in the most unexpected places. Design Austin commissioned me and my business Gus Bernal: Film+Photo+Education to capture photos of the second night of WaterWork! A colossal projection celebrating many talents of Austin’s creative community. Design Austin asked artists and designers to create short videos exploring the city’s coexistence with nature in the heart of downtown and transforming the iconic Seaholm building into a dynamic canvas of art, light, and motion projected onto the building’s Art Deco fa?ade. As a filmmaker, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to tell the story of Waterwork. My wife, Alexandra Chaves, Assoc. AIA, NOMA recommended that I pitch the idea to Emily Eisenhart to see if she would like to do a short docu-style video about the project. She was on board and excited about recording an on-camera interview with Justin Rankin, the team behind this art installation. The idea came naturally: combine intimate interviews with the creators and a compelling B-roll of the installation itself. The goal? To weave together a storytelling piece that highlights the creative process and brings to life the project. Alexandra joined me, helping capture the footage from the interviews and the installation footage. This little 80-second video shows the journey that brought this artistic vision into reality. But also represents my quest to tell stories of people, places, and art. ??? I am excited to collaborate with Design Austin and Kerrie Monahan on this project. ?? What an incredible two days of filming with the renowned UNStudio! We had the honor of interviewing their visionary founder Ben Van Berkel and his presentation by Design Austin's — Design Talks: Transformational Cities & Places of Tomorrow. On the first day, I recorded interviews with Director and Senior Architect Frans Van Vuure and Associate Director, Strategic Development for North America Carleigh Tyler Shannon. The conversation explored the design philosophy that has shaped iconic projects worldwide and now for North America. The experience was even more special as I captured footage of their new Austin office, a milestone that marks a new chapter in their global journey. To top it off, I documented a captivating presentation by Ben at the historic Texas State Theater, where innovation and architecture took center stage. Cross Cabin Build & Supply held the Healthy Materials Happy Hour event with Alkemis Paint and the Healthy Materials Lab Team at Parsons. This event was an excellent opportunity to share knowledge, raise awareness about toxins in building products, and create resources for designers and architects to make healthier places for all people to live. The panel was led by Greg Esparza, Price Latimer and Leila Behjat. Moontower Design & Build AIA Austin I had the pleasure of creating videos for this event. As a filmmaker, my business focuses on storytelling and digital media creation of videos that are appealing to social media. The main focus is good-looking footage, music, graphics, and testimonials.
