On Nov. 8, the GCPA gathered over 200 attendees on the University of Texas campus for the 10th Annual emPOWERing Women Leadership Conference. Executive Director Barbara Clemenhagen opened the event by reflecting on milestones in women’s history, including the organization’s 2013 women’s initiative pilot program, which fostered support, development & networking among women in electric power. This initiative led to the first emPOWERing Women Leadership Conference in 2014. Clemenhagen also honored Edith Clarke, the first female professor of electrical engineering at UT & an architect of modern power.

“This conference is truly a game changer,” stated conference chair Carrie Eberhard, P.E., who, along with co-chair Ruwa Collier & their planning committee, crafted an impactful agenda.

Keynote Sessions:
??Barbara Sugg, CEO of Southwest Power Pool, delivered a compelling talk titled “Confidence & Connection.” Sharing her experiences with imposter syndrome, she emphasized the importance of self-compassion, stating: “You are your own worst critic... Give yourself a break.” Sugg highlighted her strategy of KWYDK (Knowing What You Don’t Know) as vital for success.
??Sandy Nessing, Vice President & Chief Sustainability Officer at AEP, captivated the audience with her keynote, “Using Storytelling for Understanding.” She highlighted storytelling as a powerful tool for engagement, explaining how personal connections enhance understanding, especially in times of transition. “Once you sit face to face with someone, it changes what you think of them,” she noted.
??Nada Ahmed, Thought Leader & Founding Partner of Energy Tech Nexus, explored the balance between digital IQ & emotional intelligence, while Kimberly Manney Smith, Partner at Avant Executive Search & Talent Advisory, offered insights on talent trends in energy, emphasizing re-skilling & the multigenerational workforce.
Engaging Panels:
??The “Crucial Conversations” panel, moderated by Cindy S., featured leaders like MaryAnne Brelinsky, Connie Corona, Shannon Leigh J. & LaShunda Patrick discussing strategies for navigating high-stakes discussions.
??The “Advocating for Your Future” panel, also moderated by Kimberly Smith, featured Heather Bailey, Dominique Bourda, Carrie Eberhard, P.E. & Nicole Hitchcock, who shared their experiences in advocating for career growth.
??The signature C-Suite Roundtable, moderated by Courtney Hjaltman, brought together executive leaders including Laura Beane, Stacey Doré, Trisha Elizondo & Emily Shults. They shared insights on leadership, the importance of listening & empowering teams by removing barriers to performance.
