关于我们
Guitars Over Guns’ unique curriculum emphasizes social-emotional learning and outcomes through music and arts instruction. After each session, mentors assess students’ academic performance, school and program attendance, artistic progress and peer interactions. We use social-emotional learning measurements to evaluate key competencies such as empathy, teamwork, initiative, responsibility and problem solving. Recent evaluations indicate that over 90 percent of Guitars Over Guns students improved their academic performance, overall conduct and decision-making skills. These measurements are byproducts of a greater shift that is occurring in the way these young people think about the world and their place in it. Our Story: Established in Miami in 2008, the organization now operates in Miami, Chicago, LA, and New York. Since then, we've positively impacted over 9,700 students. Guitars Over Guns began as an informal music mentoring project led by Dr. Chad Bernstein, serving youth from under-resourced neighborhoods in Miami. Upon observing the students’ achievements both on stage and in the classroom, Chad formalized the program and partnered with local schools to impact even more youth. In collaboration with Communities in Schools of Miami, the first official Guitars Over Guns program began at North Miami Middle School in 2008. Over the past twelve years, the program has grown to offer no-cost music instruction, mentorship and academic support at 36 school and community sites in Miami and Chicago. Additionally, Guitars Over Guns now offers a more extensive curriculum that includes dance, visual arts and annual summer camps. With the support of our mentors, staff, community partners, board of directors and passionate advocates around the world, Guitars Over Guns is ready to inspire and empower students everywhere to #ChooseYourSound

?? On Saturday, November 9, Mentor Ryan Anthony brought Kenwood Academy High School mentees Akylah, Asheria, Brandon, DeAndre, and Antwan to assist with behind-the-scenes footage at the PG-31 fashion show fundraiser for a girls’ youth group. Through Kenwood’s photography and digital media program, in partnership with After School Matters, these talented students earn a stipend while gaining hands-on experience and building their portfolios. On October 5th, Guitars Over Guns gave 12 students from North Miami a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the magic behind the scenes of a Marley Brothers sound check at Bayfront Park in Miami. Our students got an exclusive look at what goes into preparing a multimillion-dollar show, from mastering sound to setting up the stage. Redz, the house engineer for the legendary reggae family, shared timeless advice about success in the music industry and even invited us on stage to meet some of the crew! To top it all off, we had the honor of meeting May Mau, a lifelong friend of Bob Marley, who shared personal stories about their journey together. We are beyond grateful to the Marley Brothers, Redz, and their amazing team for this unforgettable experience! Shoutout to our Community Engagement Coordinator J Howard for taking advantage of this opportunity for our students, and our mentors and staff for doing the legwork to make it happen! GOGO Community Day was all about connection, creativity, and community spirit, and we’re already excited for next year! Our guest of honor, State Senator Adriane Johnson, a true champion of our Waukegan programs, shared heartfelt reflections on the power of the arts in creating safe, meaningful spaces. She joined Chicago artist Taylor Bennett and Waukegan Programs Manager Jeremy Jervis in a powerful Q&A on childhood influences, artistic expression, and advice for youth on finding success. Bennett brought incredible energy with live performances and even jammed with our Waukegan mentees, who drummed, danced, and sang on stage—pure joy in action! A big shoutout to local groups Leg Room, Media Cosmos, and artist Zion Ari for their amazing performances, our fantastic hosts Big Drew and Robin, our vendors for keeping everyone fueled, and Boys & Girls Club of Lake County for generously hosting us!
