Quick Education Facts, Friends. The latest action to dismantle the Federal U.S. Department of Education and move full responsibility for schools and school funding to the states is expected to take place today. It's helpful to note that Federal dollars make up a small fraction of public schools' funding — between 6% and 13%, according to a 2018 report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office. The overwhelming majority of school funding already comes from the states, and through local taxes. The Federal dollars are largely intended to protect and serve our nation's most vulnerable students: those living in low-income communities, including millions of rural students, and children with disabilities. Keeping an eye on how your state addresses the needs of vulnerable students will be important. According to the U.S. Census, over 9 million children are estimated to be living in poverty in the United States. And roughly 15% of public school students ages 3 to 21, or about 7.5 million children, received special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) during the 2022-2023 school year, meaning they have an IEP. https://lnkd.in/gRMiscA8

We've been working on re-opening in person training for educators around the U.S. with support from the NAMM Foundation. This is and always has been a grassroots effort. The endeavor takes patience and persistence as we open new pathways, and support local leaders. This is especially true because Education is in a perilous time. But meeting music teachers and classroom teachers who approach each day with positivity and resilience is immensely encouraging! Together we can do this. Thank you to our newest music leaders, Kate, Jessica, Brynne, Lia, Amanda, and Peggy on Maui, to Allisa in very rural Hilbert, Wisconsin, Ann in Burlington, VT, and Candace in Altamonte Springs, FL. Thank you to each of you for bringing music to life for your communities!

Teaching literacy through music works. Along with supercharging student engagement, this is GITC's greatest area of impact. Here is why. "Neuromusical research has pinpointed the brain mechanisms and interactions that decode language sounds to understand and develop the syntax of language right through to the comprehension and creation of meaning through language. It has led to the enlightening finding that the human brain processes all language as if it was music."
