One of the most critical entrepreneurial mantras: founders should always focus on their customers’ needs –?and be agile (and humble) enough to pivot when necessary. By following it Paperstack (Techstars '21)?has been growing 100% quarterly since their Techstars program, reaching profitability in 2023. Today Paperstack’s customers –?84% of whom are business run by women and diverse founders – include e-commerce brands such as Grind Basketball (also Techstars alumni), SemiHandMade, EATABLE, and Sherpani, among many others. I love their story because they're really a case in point of this mantra. Throughout their accelerator program with Techstars, co-founders Assel Beglinova and Vadim Lidich had envisaged Paperstack as an e-commerce analytics and insights platform, which would gather data from their customers' stores and bank accounts, and provide them with a clear dashboard with which to track their financial KPIs. But as they delved deeper into their customers' real world needs and the metrics that influenced their business decisions, Assel and Vadim realized that the main obstacle for e-commerce merchants wasn’t data visibility –?but a lack of available capital. That insight enabled the pair to identify a massive untapped opportunity to fill a gap in the fintech industry that other players had overlooked. They focused on building a financial operating system to help e-commerce brands access the working capital and financial insights they need to scale. And so, with just four weeks to go until Techstars Demo Day, the Paperstack team pivoted to their current iteration – and never looked back. Prior to Paperstack, Assel’s role at a traditional bank as “the person who had to reject small business owners’ requests for financing”, gave her a first inkling of the difficulties many e-commerce companies face. Then, one day she reconnected with a college friend, Vadim, who had recently transitioned from wealth management to fintech. The duo decided to team up. In order to test their model and build up a track record of underwriting loans to e-commerce companies, they both took out personally guaranteed bank loans and deployed the capital to 10 e-commerce brands they’d identified on the internet, keeping their fingers crossed that loans would be repaid. “Luckily it worked out,” Assel recalls, “and it gave us the traction we needed to raise an institutional credit facility.” The entrepreneurs, who are based in NYC and Toronto, are experiencing surging demand for their platform –?and are targeting deployment of over $1B in capital to e-commerce brands by 2030. #startups #fundraising #growth #ecommerce #fintech
