In support of Heart Health Month, we are proud to highlight one of our Heart Heroes, Saundra Wilks. Saundra is one of our Provider Enrollment Representatives and has been with our family of companies for seven months. We asked Saundra to share her Heart Hero story with US. “In early November of 2024, I received a notification from my Fitbit app letting me know that my heart was in atrial fibrillation (AFib). I contacted my primary care provider and saw her the next day. She listened to my heart. The doctor confirmed that I was in AFib and immediately sent me to the ER. Once I reached the ER, they put me on medications to slow down my heartbeat, it was in the range of 180 – 200 beats per minute. I spent four days in the hospital as they monitored my heart and came to the decision that my heart was still not beating as rhythmically as it should, so they shocked my heart back into rhythm. The shock did the trick, but my heart had a flutter that might need correcting. While I was in the hospital, it was explained to me that when your heart goes into AFib, it is important to get it under control because it can cause blood clots which will take you down a whole different road of danger. I followed up with the cardiologist and he explained that I still had the flutter, but before he did anything, he wanted to give my heart time to recover from being shocked. It can take a month or two to recover. The cardiologist instructed me to research "ablation" so that I could get an understanding of it. If my heart still had the flutter on my next appointment, then he would do an ablation (they run a catheter from your groin to your heart and zap the nerve that is causing the flutter.) Thank God, on my following appointment there was no flutter. I am still currently on blood thinners to protect me from any blood clots forming, but I feel fine! Symptoms can include heart palpitations (the feeling that your heart is beating hard), chest pain and dizziness just to name a few. I didn’t have any of those symptoms. The symptom that I had was my lack of energy. I could walk from the parking lot to the medical clinic where I see my providers and by the time I got to the entrance of the building I had to sit down for about 10 minutes or so, before I could walk to the elevators. Putting up groceries was a task for me, I could only empty one bag and then I would have to sit down. Ladies, we are nurturers by nature, but we fail to nurture ourselves. Heart attacks can look different for us than for men, so we must be more diligent to listening to our bodies and to not shrug it off.” Saundra, thank you for sharing your Heart Hero story with US! Your story will make an impact in the lives of many. We are so glad you are part of US! Our family of companies is proud to come together to care about the people we love. Although Heart Health Month is ending, we are just getting started! Stick around to see US participate in the 2025 First Coast Heart Walk in October.

As part of Black History Month, we are celebrating the rich heritage and achievements of the Black community. This month serves as a powerful reminder of how listening, learning, and engaging in different narratives shape US. We asked a few of our team members how their experiences have not only shaped them, but those around them. We invite you to read these powerful messages. Thank you Shedrick, Thelemcia and LaWanda for sharing your stories.
