Two weeks ago, I graduated from the MBA program at Yale University - what an incredible journey it has been! ?? As an international student, moving to a new country for business school was already a daunting challenge. The typical path would have been to secure a stable job and income to establish myself. However, I knew even before starting at the Yale School of Management that my true passion was entrepreneurship. Congrats to Fanta Traore and team for the success of the Yale Black Venture Summit held at the Yale School of Management. It was one of the best events that I've attended recently and an absolute honor to be the opening keynote. The quality of the speakers was awesome. André Swanston brought the "yes, we can" vibe during his fireside chat with Fanta as he discussed how the constant rejection he faced as he built a start-up that led to a 9-figure exit actually fueled him. The founder panel that included Ciara Imani May, Malcolm-Wiley Floyd, Daryl Holman Jr., MPA and Yaw Owusu-Boahen was ??, mixing honesty about how hard it is with uplifting messages that it's still possible. The pitch competition was great, with Aasiyah Abdulsalam (go ????!!) of the The Renatural and Oyebade (Bade) Adepegba and Daniel Jayeoba of Guideli standing out the most for me. Great also to see Sabrina Lamb of Wekeza making such good progress. And the VC panel made VC accessible to black founders, which isn't always the norm, with Sherrise Pond of Anthemis Group and Abdul Abdirahman of F-Prime Capital always bringing the brilliance and the passion. It was also awesome to bump into so many friends and colleagues who are passionate about improving the dismal 0.48% of VC funding that goes to black founders, including my former Techstars colleagues Tré Baker and Adam H. Phillips, the always stylish Abraham J. Williamson, Esq., the very cool Darrel Frater ?? of Serac Ventures, and some new friends including Adeyoola Adeniji of LRVHealth, Abiodun Johnson of Black Men Talk Tech, Christian McKenzie ???? of Cap Table Coalition and Chi Achebe of Achebe Capital. That my former students (including Kiana Mendes and Kimberly Rosa-Perez) came by to see me was just icing on the cake. Thanks also to Edirin (Leslie) Aghoghovbia for dinner and laughs at Olea after the event. ???? Fanta and team made sure to give each speaker or panelist their flowers (literally!), so it's only right that I tell them publicly - well done! ?? And even more incredible that this will all done as a side hustle while they studied for their finals. They raised the money for the event from sponsors and organized it all gracefully, always with a smile and even giving hugs to the speakers and attendees at the end. Btw, Danielle Holley, Neva Ouilikon and Paula Campbell Roberts - you guys were all there in spirit (and in the pic), as I mentioned you as investors in FounderTribes!
