The other day Debra Werner from SpaceNews caught up with Solstar Space Co. Founder and CEO, Brian Barnett. He talked about our focus on providing space-to-ground and space-to-space communications.?In the article, Debra covered Solstar's plans to conduct spaceflight testing in 2025 for our Deke narrowband satellite data-relay transceiver. Seattle startup Carbon Robotics raised $70 million in a Series D investment round for its AI robot that zaps weeds on farms around the world. I spoke with CEO and founder Paul Mikesell (who previously co-founded Isilon Systems and is a University of Washington computer science grad) to learn more about what's driving growth: ?? Solving customer problems: The company's 20-foot "LaserWeeder" machine helps farmers both eliminate?herbicide-resistant weeds?and stop using herbicides. The robots also take care of repetitive and dangerous work, according to Mikesell, allowing farmers to move their employees to other tasks. ???? Focus on customer service: Carbon spends a lot of time in the literal field with farmers. "Turns out, if you treat your customers well, they treat you well," Mikesell said. ?? Business model: Many agtech startups followed bad advice to use a "robots-as-a-service" recurring revenue model, according to Mikesell. Carbon sells the machines to farmers. “I think that’s where a lot of the problems come from, honestly —?people trying to map old school business models onto AI robotics and realizing it doesn’t work until it’s too late,” Mikesell said. The fresh investment round, led by San Francisco-based BOND, will help Carbon Robotics expand into Asia and open a new 24,000 square-foot manufacturing plant in Richland, Wash., across the state from its corporate headquarters.
