Harnessing the Power of Partnership

关于我们

At Guide Dogs for the Blind (GDB), we believe that everyone deserves to move through the world safely and confidently—to live the life they want to live. Our passionate community employs innovative practices to create life-changing partnerships. And, we advocate for the policy reforms that change how the world views blindness and disability. Because when everyone is empowered to participate, our communities are stronger. With world-class client services and a robust network of instructors, puppy raisers, donors, and volunteers, we prepare highly qualified guide dogs and K9 Buddy dogs, provide guide dog readiness skills, and offer youth programs to empower individuals who are blind or visually impaired. GDB not only improves mobility for our clients, we further inclusion. As the largest guide dog school in North America, more than 16,000 guide dog teams have graduated from GDB from across the U.S. and Canada since our founding in 1942. All of our services are provided free of charge, including personalized training and ongoing support, plus financial assistance for veterinary care, if needed. Our work is made possible by the generous support of our donors and volunteers; we receive no government funding. • The year was 1941, and Lois Merrihew was on California Street in San Francisco when she remembers first hearing that the United States would enter World War II. America's involvement in the war brought the realization that blinded veterans would be returning to San Francisco. Years before, she had decided to pursue her childhood dream to train dogs as guides for the blind. An east coast school told her that women were not hired as trainers. They were not considered physically or emotionally fit for such work. That response solidified her resolve to become a dog guide trainer. She joined forces with Don Donaldson, and together, they formed Guide Dogs for the Blind on May 27, 1942, and operated from a rented house in Los Gatos, CA, until it eventually moved to its present location in San Rafael, CA, in 1947. Lois later became the school's director of training. "Of any of my accomplishments, I am most proud of Senate Bill #2391, passed in 1947, setting standards and licensing for both trainers and schools," she said. "Before then, anyone could 'train' and sell dogs to blind persons, without any guarantee of proper training." Lois was the first woman to become a licensed dog guide instructor. Happy International Women’s Day to all of the trailblazers and supporters who have helped make Lois’s dream a reality in the last 80+ years.
