I believe deeply that there is great power in telling your story. Candidly, the opportunity to tell mine came at a time when I was not feeling the greatest and the process made me feel better. This reminded me of the importance of timing. I am thankful that timing worked out such that my story could be shared at a time when people are challenging the power and validity of diversity, equity and inclusion. Looking back at this article, although it was unintentional, each of the role models, inspirations and people mentioned in this article is Black. I frankly do not know if I would have been here or would have thought that this was possible without them. The power of representation cannot be overstated. I acknowledge that I am here because I stand on the shoulders of giants. When you think of the Kansas City Chiefs’ incredible dominance in the National Football League (NFL)—three Super Bowl wins in the last five years—you might not immediately think of Patrick Mitchell. But as the team’s project director of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and construction, Mitchell is critical to their success, playing a different kind of defense off the field. A Louisiana state champion wrestler, Mitchell’s path took a profound turn after graduating high school in 2001. Inspired by the events of 9/11, he chose West Point, where he began his journey as a leader. After completing Army Ranger school, he served three tours of duty in Afghanistan, including during the pivotal 2009 troop surge, and later in Jordan as the Syrian war unfolded. Today, Mitchell brings that same leadership and precision to the Kansas City Chiefs.
