Do you look like 100 Grand on paper? What about 200 Grand? Some things amplify and some detract from your resume standing out to get you airtime. Over the past 15 years, I have, among other things, worked on resumes. My resume coaching has been very focused. Getting #mbas and #advanceddegree students and professionals jobs at the top levels of selectivity and compensation. Now, as we are in the #AI storm, are resumes getting better? ?? Here is the SPOOKY news: Nope. In fact, I would contend they are getting worse - because now you can snap crackle pop! and create your resume. Do you see this too? These things I have found make a significant difference in getting interviews. And, how do I know? Evidence. Hired at McKinsey & Company, Amazon, Google, Bain & Company, Boston Consulting Group (BCG), Goldman Sachs, and other highly selective employers. 1. Polished format. The wrapping paper on the gift is beautiful. Thus, I want to open the gift. It looks intentional - margins, font, use of bold, use of caps, indents. Does it matter? Damn right. If your resume is messy, your work will be too. 2. Insane focus. I have worked with many job seekers who only applied to 1-3 firms. The language used mirrored. The skills were very clear. The personality of the person conveyed fit. The environment and culture came through in words. 3. Results. Push for every bullet to show impact, change, award, and result. Did things get bigger or smaller. Did you get a promotion, patent, or publication. Show me you are someone who GSD. (That is short for Get S&%t Done). 4. Your Tom Brady Factors. What QB Tom Brady was known for was working harder than anyone. He trained, studied, and motivated others. "Relentless work ethic, unshakeable focus under pressure, and ability to elevate his teammates." 5. Prior experience. To command high 6 figure salaries, it is unlikely you are stepping into the job cold. Even with elite MBA programs, on resume alone, a 100% career changer will be at a significant disadvantage vs. peers who have more similar experience. The resume alone does not factor into your ability to get interviews. Engaging with recruiters and hiring managers is invaluable. But, even upon referral of the highest caliber, lacking the 5 items discussed here will reduce your chances of an interview invite. As you consider your current resume, take note of this. A high quality, high-impact resume to crack the 100 Grand door, then the 200 Grand door, takes 20-40 hours of work. Easily 15-25 iterations. I know. I have done this with various students and professionals. It is a high ROI effort AND it impacts your interviews. So, check your resume. Do you say: ? "launched MVP" or ?? "launched MVP with 1,000 users in first 30 days" or ?? "exceeded MVP 30-day user goals by 200%" Good, better, best in your resume.
