??Global and U.S. Measles Resurgence?and Community Monitoring Methods Through Wastewater Surveillance-?GT Molecular has measles assay kits and wastewater testing services available now. As of March 11, 2025, the global health community is grappling with a significant resurgence of measles, particularly pronounced in the United States. The current outbreak, originating in West Texas, has rapidly expanded, affecting neighboring states and highlighting critical public health challenges. Measles, once nearing eradication due to effective vaccination campaigns, has seen a troubling comeback in various parts of the world. In the United States, there have already been 222 reported cases so far this year (CDC-last updated 3/6/25), compared with 289 cases from all of last year. Aside from the ongoing hospitalizations and economic impacts, tragically, this outbreak has resulted in two fatalities: an unvaccinated child in Texas and an unvaccinated adult in New Mexico. ??Innovative Monitoring Approach In response to the escalating measles cases, innovative monitoring methods are being employed, and GT Molecular has developed measles assay kits designed for wastewater surveillance. These kits enable early detection of measles outbreaks by identifying viral presence in community wastewater, offering a proactive approach to public health monitoring and directing critical response. Testing can be performed for an entire facility, community, or city from a single sample, making testing both economical and fast. ??Conclusion The resurgence of measles underscores the critical importance of maintaining high vaccination rates and addressing vaccine misinformation. Integrating advanced monitoring tools, such as GT Molecular's wastewater assay kits, can enhance early detection and response efforts, ultimately safeguarding public health. ??Contact us to start testing today. Assay kits and testing services available now. https://bit.ly/3zPBfBM We have so many assays and testing services to improve public health available now. ??Microbial Source Tracking (MST) ??Arboviruses ??High-Risk Substances (i.e. opioids, fentanyl, etc.) ??PFAS ??Pathogens (viral, bacterial, fungal, protozoa) ??AMR targets ??16S sequencing ??& Many more!!! ???Note:?Vaccination remains the most important mechanism to prevent outbreaks and spread of this highly pathogenic, severe symptom (high fever, encephalitis, hospitalization, death), and economically disruptive disease . Measles was considered eradicated in the US in 2000, but vaccination has been declining and while preventable, cases have been on the rise. ??When it comes to clade I mpox, the third time is *not* the charm. New Hampshire just joined the list of U.S. states—alongside California and Georgia—that have reported a clade I case since late 2024. Compared with clade II mpox, which has driven a global outbreak since 2022, clade I is often associated with more severe disease. Since early 2024, it has caused over 40,000 cases in Central and Eastern Africa, and an increasing number of cases in Asia, Europe, and North America. ??What does this mean for those who work with wastewater? To help you stay informed, we’ve released a free fact sheet on Mpox Information for Water Professionals: ?? ?? https://lnkd.in/ducHrUuU ?? ?? . ??In this resource, you’ll find details about: Why mpox is a concern and its symptoms What we know about mpox persistence in wastewater The role of wastewater monitoring in tracking outbreaks Safety tips for working with untreated wastewater This document was developed by the Water Environment Federation with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and is an updated and expanded version of the original fact sheet prepared by the outstanding Pathogens & Indicators Focus Group of WEF’s Disinfection and Public Health Community. ?? Recent Measles Outbreaks in the U.S. & Available Wastewater Testing Options from GT Molecular?? A recent report from Texas DSHS indicates a measles outbreak in Gaines County, Texas, primarily affecting unvaccinated school-aged children. As of February 10, 2025, the Texas Department of State Health Services has identified 10 cases with symptom onset within the past two?weeks. Eight of these cases involve school-aged children, and seven patients have been hospitalized. Due to the highly contagious nature of measles, additional cases are likely to occur in the surrounding communities. In 2025 measles cases have also been reported in Alaska, Georgia, New York, and Rhode Island (CDC.gov). ?Why this is important? Measles is a highly contagious and serious disease, especially in children, due to its potential for severe acute and chronic complications. ??Pneumonia: The most common cause of measles-related deaths in young children. ??Ear Infections: Common with measles and can lead to permanent hearing loss. ??Severe Diarrhea and Dehydration ??Weakened immune system: Measles can temporarily suppress the immune system, increasing vulnerability to other infections. ??Encephalitis: A rare but serious brain swelling that can cause long-term brain damage. ??Infants under 12 months (too young for vaccination) and immunocompromised children are at higher risk for severe disease. ??Vaccination is key to prevention. ????Early Detection with Wastewater Testing???? GT Molecular's advanced wastewater surveillance technology can detect measles RNA in sewage, and may provide health officials with early warnings before symptoms appear in the population,?enabling targeted public health response and assist the protection of vulnerable populations. ??GT Molecular provides national testing services and assay kits on the QIAGEN QIAcuity??and Bio-Rad QX200?/QX600??for detecting measles in wastewater. ??West Nile Detection in Wastewater is Here.???? Introducing the first commercially available assay kit for monitoring West Nile virus in Wastewater. Available on the QIAGEN QIAcuity??Digital PCR Platform. Contact us for other platforms and testing service options. ?Why this is important.? West Nile virus (WNV) is a flavivirus that is transmitted mainly by?Culex spp.?mosquitoes, and is classified as an emerging infectious disease. Birds act as a reservoir for the virus, and it can cause disease in humans, horses, and select bird populations. The virus is capable of severe disease in humans and horses, with the potential for neuroinvasive disease, and is found all over the US. Warming climate is expected to drive up WNV disease cases in the coming years, as it will allow for its specific mosquito vectors to reach previously inaccessible locations. Similar to other viruses currently being monitored using wastewater surveillance, recent publications have shown WNV RNA shedding in human urine. Utilizing and continuing to grow our existing wastewater surveillance network for monitoring diseases like WNV is crucial to tracking the spread, improving preparedness, and increasing responsiveness.
