Happy Earth Week! At GT Environmental, we understand that recycling is only part of the sustainability puzzle. The environmental impact of hauling waste is a crucial element that often goes unnoticed. The transportation sector is the largest source of direct greenhouse gas emissions, contributing 28%. Waste trucks, although making up just 4% of the U.S. vehicle population, consume the second largest amount of fuel. These statistics are provided by the U.S. EPA and U.S. Department of Energy. While optimizing collection routes is one effective solution, transitioning to renewable waste trucks presents an even greater opportunity. Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) are emerging as cleaner alternatives to diesel-powered fleets. RNG, derived from organic waste, leads the charge as a promising low-carbon fuel. RNG offers a carbon-negative alternative that can significantly reduce the emissions from waste trucks, helping move away from petroleum reliance. Waste trucks are as essential as ever in keeping our businesses and communities running smoothly. As the transportation sector continues to reduce its dependency on fossil fuels, renewable waste trucks are a critical part of the solution. #SustainableWasteManagement

Did you know that nearly one-third of all food purchased in the U.S. is thrown out—and nearly half of that waste comes from residential households? With grocery prices on the rise, cutting down on food waste isn’t just good for the planet—it’s great for your wallet too! GT Environmental has teamed up with The Ohio State University and the City of Columbus for a Residential Food Waste Study. Our goal? To gather critical data that will help Ohio State develop a campaign to reduce food waste and help households save money. We recently wrapped up our first two-week waste sort, manually sorting nearly 10 tons of waste—a huge effort made possible by Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO)’s incredible team, who helped mix, store, and transport the waste on-site. And this is just the beginning! With two more sorts ahead in Columbus, we’re excited to keep pushing forward with this impactful research. Looking to advance your organization’s sustainability and waste management goals? Visit our website at https://lnkd.in/gvbUSJKe to learn how we can help you achieve your goals.

Despite widespread recycling initiatives, only 21% of recyclable materials are recovered. A staggering 76% is lost at the household level, and 3% at MRFs (The Recycling Partnership, 2024 State of Recycling). As we celebrate America Recycles Day, it's time to reflect on how we can do better. We all have a role to play in reducing waste and increasing recycling recovery. ♻️ Call to Action: • Improve Access: Ensure all households have convenient recycling services. • Educate & Engage: Provide clear and consistent messaging on local recycling practices to boost participation. • Support Policy Initiatives: Advocate for policies that strengthen recycling infrastructure.

It’s great to see The Ohio State University continuing research and investment into combatting food waste. This next endeavor sees a partnership between The Ohio State University and the City of Columbus. Columbus is the first test site to pilot a large-scale food waste reduction campaign. The project, led by Professor Brian Roe, hopes to reduce the amount of food going to landfill from Columbus households and contribute to national efforts to combat food waste. The campaign is part of a larger $2.5 million USDA-funded food waste initiative across three cities in the United States. GT is gearing up to lead data collection through multi-week waste characterizations over the two year project life cycle. Check out the attached news release from October 8th and join the webinar to learn more about the exciting things to come! Let’s go Columbus! Webinar Link: https://lnkd.in/ev6i6ER7

Yes, we sort trash because we love the data! Purdue University’s Sustainability team is taking the step to learn what is in the campus trash and where their opportunity is for reduction, reuse, and recycling. Sorting alongside Purdue staff, students, and interns over TWO tons of material was sorted. A huge thanks to Patrick Brown, Anthony Gillund, students, interns, and the entire Grounds Department.

What an incredible week with my team, sorting ~4,000 lbs of landfill and recyclable waste for Purdue University. Manually sorting and analyzing waste in 90 degree heat is no joke, but we gathered great data and had a blast doing it. And, I got to ride in the recycling truck and dump a recycling load!! ♻️ Huge thanks to Patrick Brown , Anthony Gillund , Jason, students who sorted alongside us, and the entire Purdue Grounds team for the great experience. Excited to wrap up this GT Environmental, Inc. project and get some great results for our client/friends! 🙌🏻 We may not all agree on which is the best Big 10 school out there, but I think this team can at least agree that we work well together 😉
