???Strengthening Institutional Capacity for Private Sector Growth in Malawi ???? We recently launched an initiative with Malawi’s Ministry of Trade and Industry, supported by Growth Teams, to equip the Private Sector Development (PSD) team with the skills to drive impactful reforms. ???Mission 1 Highlights: ?? 22 government officials (13 women) identified key private sector challenges. ?? A core team of 12 received hands-on training in?problem-driven iterative adaptation (PDIA)?to develop actionable reform strategies. ????Why this matters: Sustained reforms need strong institutional capacity. This initiative embeds problem-solving skills within the Ministry to lead long-term business environment improvements. ???What’s next? “What has evolved instead...are ‘informal spaces’ and a ‘makeshift economy’ in which people hustle a living in the absence of formal jobs. The gap between the education and ambitions of millions of young people...has fostered generational frustration and, in some cases, political movements that are challenging failing authorities.” ?? A thought-provoking new article on African youth and cities from the Financial Times. ?? By 2030, 47% of Africans will live in cities. But urban growth isn’t translating to opportunity. Slums outpace infrastructure. Degrees don’t guarantee jobs. Protests erupt as youth demand accountability. ? In the face of these challenges, youth are providing optimism and energy in cities across Africa. These cities, in turn, need to provide them with productive avenues to contribute to the economy. "????????????-?????????????? ???????????????? ???? ?????????????????????? ?????? ?????? ???? ?????????????? ?????? ???????????????????????? ???????????????? ?????? ?????????????????? ???????????????????? ????????????." A new post from The World Bank Economist Tristan Reed highlights how effective two-way communication between governments and firms is essential to developing new industries and creating jobs. Through this public-private dialogue: ? Firms reveal constraints ? Governments shape policy ? A feedback loop enables adjustment and improvement Lessons from across countries, including Cambodia, Peru, and Tunisia show that specific practices–small trusted groups, dedicated technical staff, and regular meetings–make this collaborative process effective. ???? The Importance of Growth for a Human Well-Being ???? "Is most of the world at a state where growth has ceased to be important for achieving human well-being? The answer is no, nowhere near" Our advisor Lant Pritchett recently did a thought-provoking interview with VoxDev, where he emphasized how powerful growth can be for increasing human well-being in low- and middle-income countries. He also highlighted inclusive economic growth and state capability as the most critical issues in development to study and work on in the coming decades. We at Growth Teams are proud to be working at the intersection of these two critical topics. If you're passionate about promoting development, this is a must-listen! ??? Link in the comments. ?? Reflections from the Growth Summit ?? Looking back at the Growth Summit in October, James Foster, from our partner Gatsby Africa, shares how he has drawn on the 2-day event to shape the organization's engagement with the Government of Tanzania--a collaboration that Growth Teams is thrilled to be supporting. Highlights from the Summit that we're leveraging in this work include: ?? Economic vision with priority actions ?? Small, dynamic, and empowered teams in government ?? Problem-driven collaboration between the public and private sectors ?? Effective coordination across government #EconomicTransformation #StructuralTransformation #EconomicGrowth #InclusiveGrowth #JobCreation #GrowthSummit #Tanzania https://lnkd.in/ggCQxr-d Kartik Akileswaran Chema Triki Jonathan Mazumdar Center for Global Development Charter Cities Institute Lindi Hlanze Development Economist
2025 has started with a bang as we have been engaged with the centre of government in Tanzania to provide urgent evidence for its Vision 2050 and long-term planning on national opportunities for inclusive growth. I have been drawing on my notes from last October's Growth Summit and thought that they were worth sharing! This Summit, hosted by Centre for Global Development (CGD), Growth Teams, and Charter Cities Institute aimed to examine why economic growth and structural transformation have been de-prioritised as pillars of development; and sought to identify tangible actions that can deliver on this ambitious and long-term agenda. The summit recognised that while macro-economic stability is important, on its own it is not enough to drive inclusive economic growth at rates to make a real dent in poverty numbers. Speakers such as Stefan Dercon, Vera Songwe and Arvind Subramanian recognised that growth requires economic reform and that this is largely a political choice - which is not always feasible. They acknowledged that renewed emphasis on industrial policy in the global North perhaps provides more leeway for national leaders in the global South to prioritise growth. Speaking on ‘new’ industrial policy, Adnan Khan, highlighted how sector specific investment can and should be utilised to accelerate structural transformation in low-income states, even with inherent challenges like cronyism, by drawing on "pockets of effectiveness", working with reformers and employing a dynamic, adaptive, opportunistic approach. Great examples of this in practice were presented by senior leaders from Peru, Morocco and India, showcasing how both localised cluster type approaches as well as national public-investment and policy-led changes were needed. Key takeaways include: i)??????????????Having a prioritised vision for transformation that can guide civil servants and decision-makers and which is both ambitious and practical. ii)?????????????Enabling small, capable teams to work on specific initiatives in pursuit of this larger vision, with feedback and adaptation as well as authority. iii)???????????Formal public-private dialogue rarely works – it needs to be focused on solving problems and hence for business leaders to work more informally with technical staff who have a direct link to decision-makers. iv)????????????There is a need to bring in key parts of government, e.g. Ministry of Finance, PM’s office to provide budget and secure coordination. v)?????????????Creating space for local autonomy can show tangible and immediate impacts, provide an easier route to problem solving and can enable easier public-private coordination. Low Income countries with strong institutional structures and high-level commitment to economic transformation are rare. The lessons from the Growth Summit have strengthened our resolve to support such structures where we can.
