GrowNYC, a 501(c)3, serves 3 million New Yorkers each year, providing opportunities to make NYC truly livable.

关于我们

GrowNYC is a hands-on non-profit with a mission to empower all New Yorkers with equitable access to fresh, locally grown food and neighborhood green spaces, reduce waste, and care for the environment. GrowNYC was originally created in 1970 as the Council on the Environment of New York City (CENYC). Born out of the spirit of the first Earth Day, CENYC was initially a policy-based organization, writing comprehensive reports about quality of life issues like air quality, traffic, and noise. Today, we serve over 3 million New Yorkers annually through a robust network of sustainability programs and resources. Our programs focus our efforts on four key areas: Food Access & Agriculture, Green Spaces, Zero Waste and Education. Since 1970, GrowNYC has been rolling up its sleeves alongside NYC residents to: - Provide access to healthy, fresh, local food for all New Yorkers -Grow and maintain vibrant green spaces and community gardens. -Help New Yorkers recycle more and reduce waste. -Create the next generation of environmental leaders through hands-on education programs.

New York City is enduring a record stretch of inadequate rainfall. These dry conditions have sparked wildfires in Brooklyn, New Jersey, and Upstate New York, and underscore the critical need for local water conservation in our changing climate. Why it matters:?No natural resource is more important to community gardeners than water, and identifying and ensuring a dependable source is vital to every garden's success. GrowNYC has been building and revitalizing gardens and green spaces for nearly 50 years. During a severe drought in 2001, we partnered with NYC Parks GreenThumb to pioneer the design of urban rainwater harvesting systems to help community gardens stay alive. Rainwater harvesting is the practice of collecting and storing rainwater for future use. The practice of rainwater harvesting has been used by many cultures throughout human history but had previously declined as urbanization has demanded a more centralized water supply system. The bottom line:?Due to water pollution, drought, and increasing water demands, rainwater harvesting has once again become an important component of our built environment and a way to help create more resilient and sustainable cities and green spaces. By the numbers:?GrowNYC has built over 140 rainwater harvest systems in NYC, collecting more than 1.5 million gallons of water annually. Support our work! We are a 501(c)(3) and our work runs on support from friends like you. Support us by making a?one time tax-deductible donation! Donate: https://lnkd.in/eUy9CV5 #drought #NYCdrought

As featured in the Bronx Times, a critical new partnership between GrowNYC, the Graham Windham O.U.R. Place Family Enrichment Center, and The Point CDC is addressing the urgent food insecurity faced by families in the Bronx. Through this collaboration, GrowNYC is delivering locally-produced fruits, vegetables, eggs, and grains from New York State producers and farms, with a special emphasis on promoting and uplifting historically underrepresented farms businesses. With the Bronx having the highest rate of food insecurity in New York State, and the need for immediate action is undeniable. We need your help to continue this vital work - donate today to help GrowNYC ensure fresh, nutritious food reaches those who need it most, and to sustain the long-term viability of our local farms and communities. For those of us dedicated to environmental action, justice, and sustainability, the recent election’s implications are profound. Our work and the communities we serve are facing significant challenges. 8 years ago, GrowNYC saw firsthand the destructive impact of policies that aimed to dismantle vital environmental, agricultural, and food security protections. Today, we find ourselves on the brink of similar threats. But this isn’t a time for despair—it’s a moment to come together, to reinvest and strengthen our commitment to each other, our planet, and our communities. Since 1970, GrowNYC has been powered by New Yorkers like you. Together, we’ve advocated for lasting environmental solutions, created green spaces, provided fresh produce to those in need, and empowered countless individuals to grow food, build community, and protect our urban environment. While much has changed, our mission and spirit remain as strong as ever. Today, we’re calling on you to help ensure that GrowNYC can continue to be a beacon of sustainability for all of NYC. The path to a just and sustainable future is long, and we cannot walk it alone. Your support now is more critical than ever. Will you stand with us in this fight for a future where all New Yorkers can thrive in a healthy, sustainable, and equitable city? Please consider making a tax deductible donation today. GrowNYC was thrilled to welcome another team from Bloomberg to our McCarren Park Demonstration Garden for a day of meaningful volunteer work. Their efforts—building, staining, and sanding picnic tables, and decorating produce bags—play a crucial role in sustaining our work across New York City. Corporate partnerships like this are vital in helping GrowNYC continue our mission to create green spaces, improve food access, and build resilient communities. With Bloomberg’s help, GrowNYC is making a lasting impact, one project at a time.

Disparities in access to healthy foods are a reality across NYC, with underserved communities facing the greatest challenges. But there’s hope—here’s how GrowNYC’s Farmstand program makes a difference: our Farmstands provide weekly opportunities for these communities to buy fresh, local fruits, vegetables, and food staples at below-market prices. How do we keep prices low? -We transparently buy food through GrowNYC’s Food Hub. By purchasing in bulk and subsidizing our distribution costs through fundraising, we’re able to pass the savings on to New Yorkers. -All our food access sites, including Farmstand, accept nutrition benefits such as SNAP/EBT, WIC and Senior FMNP, Health Bucks, and HealthFirst OTC (select plans). -SNAP/EBT recipients get a daily Health Bucks match of up to $10 for fruits and veggies, further boosting their purchasing power! -At the end of each day, all unsold food is donated to deeply-rooted community groups at the forefront of fighting hunger locally. Why it matters: Farmstands create a more equitable food system by offering affordable, high-quality local food to all New Yorkers while ensuring farmers receive fair prices. ?? Your support makes all this possible! Donate to GrowNYC at https://lnkd.in/eUy9CV5 and help us continue this vital work.

Thank you cari borja for including GrowNYC! We were honored to attend the Climate Hope Food School Lunch and the launch of the School Supported Agriculture campaign. The opening of our new NYS Regional Food Hub will create critical infrastructure for an alternative regional food system that supports family farms and gets fresh food into underserved communities. We look forward our continued and deepening partnership.

and this happened yesterday, after Climate Food Hope “school lunch” at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History… a walk to the mall. “This is the power of gathering: it inspires us, delightfully, to be more hopeful, more joyful, more thoughtful: in a word, more alive.” -Alice Waters // “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has". - Margaret Mead // what a week… one more thing, and then home ??
