Grow Further asked our grantee, Dr. Henry Ojulong, from ICRISAT, about the inspiration behind his career in plant breeding. For him, it’s deeply personal: “I started work on staple crops because I grew up seeing them grow and eating them.” But the most rewarding part? Seeing farmers thrive. Modern aquaculture in the Amazon began in the 1980s, and it has become the fastest-growing animal-sourced food system in the five Amazonian countries included in a new study (Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru). According to a paper in Nature Sustainability from Cornell researchers and colleagues in the U.S. and Brazil, expanding aquaculture in the Amazon could provide nutritional and economic benefits at a fraction of the environmental cost of cattle grazing.
