Check out this story from #foodtank that covers the trend in #Zimbabwe to embrace traditional, drought-resistant crops like finger millet, pearl millet, and sorghum amidst this year's devastating drought—the worst in 40 years. Meanwhile, we're making strides with our Iron-Rich #PearlMillet project, now in the trial phase! Farmers are loving this #drought-resistant variety. Next step will be submitting the application for its commercial release. Grow Further has joined the over 150 Nobel & World Food Prize Laureates calling for bold "moonshot" efforts to boost food production as global demand rises. Says Peter Kelly, our founder and CEO, “Worsening climate change lends urgency to fighting hunger and malnutrition proactively. We currently have four projects running in Africa to boost food production with indigenous and climate-smart crop development as well as AI technology for early detection of plant disease." Sharing this terrific insight from @OneAcreFund on #agroforestry and how it can help smallholder farmers' food security & income. #MoreThanATree #FoodSecurity? #InnovationInAgriculture??#SustainableAgriculture #WorldFoodSecurity?
Often farmers see trees as competing with food production, but agroforestry can boost harvests by improving soil health and preventing erosion. Fruit trees like macadamia, citrus varieties, and avocado provide farmers with an additional income stream. By selling fruits alongside traditional crops, farmers can build financial resilience. ???? Baraka Msemwa, a 31-year-old farmer from Wanging’ombe District in Tanzania, has seen his income grow significantly thanks to avocado trees: “I have built my family home. I plan to invest more in growing and selling avocados to grow my income.” ??? Every tree is so much #MoreThanATree for the farmer who plants it. Discover how tree planting is a win for farmers and nature???? https://lnkd.in/dCHs5ixX ??

Grow Further asked our grantee, Dr. Henry Ojulong, from ICRISAT, about the inspiration behind his career in plant breeding. For him, it’s deeply personal: “I started work on staple crops because I grew up seeing them grow and eating them.” But the most rewarding part? Seeing farmers thrive. "The rewarding experience has been accompanying farmers to their fields, and then you see how happy they are to see a variety doing well." Modern aquaculture in the Amazon began in the 1980s, and it has become the fastest-growing animal-sourced food system in the five Amazonian countries included in a new study (Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru). According to a paper in Nature Sustainability from Cornell researchers and colleagues in the U.S. and Brazil, expanding aquaculture in the Amazon could provide nutritional and economic benefits at a fraction of the environmental cost of cattle grazing.
