    Most fashion brands get one thing wrong when it comes to vacation campaigns featuring Black models and without a doubt it's our hair. But Aritzia? They got it right. To launch their Vacation Edit during Black History Month, Aritzia cast a stunning Black model. That alone is a strong nod to cultural resonance especially considering that, according to Tripadvisor and Group Black, Black U.S. travelers hold over $100 billion in spending power annually. But that’s not the kicker. The real brilliance lies in a detail often overlooked: her hair. Braided. Sleek. A protective style. A choice rooted in cultural insight, not just aesthetics through a non-Black lens. Because here’s my thing, hair isn’t just hair for Black travelers. Having a Black mother and two sisters I learned very early on in life that it’s about ease. Convenience. The freedom to swim without worry. The ability to move through a vacation without heat damage, humidity struggles, or hours spent restyling. As Thandi Maqubela, Legal Director & Co-Founder of Lawyer’s Dining Club, told Thrillist: "My favorite things are the convenience, the ease of swimming when on holiday, giving my edges a break, and having my whole face exposed." This is how you build authentic brand affinity. By ensuring that every detail, down to the glam team, respects and reflects the lived experiences of the consumers you’re courting. Bravo to the Aritzia creative team for doing what so many miss. This is how you sell a moment [and mean it].
