Grosse Pointe Public School System

Five schools (Brownell Middle School, Barnes Early Childhood center, Ferry Elementary, Monteith Elementary and Richard Elementary) in the Grosse Pointe School District were awarded MiHeartsafe designations in East Lansing. A HEARTSafe designation recognizes a school’s efforts to prevent sudden cardiac death of the young (SCDY) by preparing for a cardiac emergency. Members of this school community know how to recognize the signs of a sudden cardiac arrest and respond quickly by calling 9-1-1 and using CPR and an automated external defibrillator (AED) until EMS arrives. These schools have worked hard to put a team together and perform practice drills. Great job to everyone involved!

Shout out to Mr. Metzger, Mason's PE teacher, for creatively planning for a flash mob led by fourth grade students! They spent weeks preparing it, which included all 4th grade students in both classes! Staff gathered for the surprise and it was a hit performance!

During the past few weeks, the 4th graders and 3/4 Magnet students at Defer have been learning all about our government! After studying government in class, they had a visit from GPP Mayor Michele Hodges and GPP City Manager Nick Sizeland. The following week, they traveled to Lansing to tour the capitol building and the Michigan History Museum. Joe Tate even took a group of students onto the floor and to his office for an added bonus to the tour!

It's National School Psychology Week! This week celebrates the contributions of school psychologists and the important role they play in schools and communities. This year’s theme, “Spark Discovery,” recognizes the work that school psychologists do to help their communities seek out new ideas, effect change, and expand horizons for children and youth. Today is World Kindness Day! At Maire, 253 Maire Bears created flowers to share how they recognize or share kindness with others. They decorated their hallways to display these amazing ideas!

Advanced students from North and South High School TV Production programs went to Ford Field for the Great Lakes Sports Broadcasting and Media Academy sponsored by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters. The students listened to keynote speaker, Dan Miller, the radio voice for the Detroit Lions, and participated in various media related breakout sessions with industry professionals! ????

Students from Mrs. Parent's Psychology class at South took a developmental psychology field trip to Richard Elementary to learn about childhood development. Students interviewed students from Ms. Koleber's Young-5s classroom and Mr. Williams' 3/4 Magnet class. They even got an opportunity to interact during recess, playing football, gaga ball, and tag together!

District Open House on Sunday, November 3, was a great opportunity for our community and prospective families to visit our schools! Families, prospective students, and community members enjoyed exploring classrooms, meeting staff, and discovering the engaging learning opportunities our buildings have to offer.
