This just in from Chase Walton, Our Technical Editor: +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Majors Kudos to ESPN and ABC: NCAA SEC Football !! The experience tonight on their NCAA football broadcast Georgia @ Kentucky was phenomenal.?Sterling upscaled 4K HDR picture almost entirely free from ugly compression artifacts and an Atmos mix that really puts "immersive" into the live sound experience.?I'm very impressed with the balance.?Loud swells from the crowd are sometimes allowed to overwhelm the commentary, which is unheard-of in my years of experience with live production.?Another surprise is the mix on the network theme music cues as wells as pop music they've licensed to play on intros and outros.?These have all been upmixed to Atmos, with strong (but not overblown) LFE support giving them a solid bass line and "power" that matches the dynamics of the crowd.?And speaking of dynamics...wow!?You can feel the emotion in the stadium as it goes from quiet enough to hear a pin drop when the home team's offense has the ball to thunderous when the opposing team has a 3rd?of 4th?down.?In normal broadcast audio, all of that gets smash compressed and pushed way into the background behind the commentary. Xfinity's Enhanced 4K feed from ABC is a bit of an oddball, because it's a clean feed (backhaul) from the truck at the venue.?You never see this during normal broadcasting; something at ESPN or ABC master control must be incompatible with the truck.?There is no pre-game, half-time?or post-game studio analysis.?There are no ad breaks.?There are no network/station bugs or lower thirds.?There is a full-screen ID graphic until the network throws to the stadium.?During ads breaks, you get a montage of wide shots of the stadium (including some nice drone work) with full immersive stadium ambience in Atmos (including the marching bands, the stadium DJ and performances by the cheerleaders/dance teams).?At halftime, there is a static wide shot of the field with the matching bands performing.
