Earlier this fall, GRID's Bay Area North Coast team visited Mendocino College in Ukiah, California to share our work with the college's new Introduction to Photovoltaics class. Our staff spent the day with students, sharing about our workforce development programs and the opportunities offered in the growing solar industry. ? More recently, we were able to host 20 students from Mendocino College along with their professor, to experience a solar installation first-hand. We want to say a big thank you to our partners at Mendocino College and Dry Creek Rancheria Band of Pomo Indians for making this experience for the students possible. ? This Veteran’s Day, we recognize the crucial work of Operation Dignity, a Bay Area nonprofit providing housing and support to veterans and their families. Since 1993, Operation Dignity has dedicated itself to serving the most vulnerable populations experiencing homelessness in Alameda County, including veterans and those living in encampments. This year, GRID Alternatives partnered with Operation Dignity to install a low-cost solar rooftop system on their “House of Dignity” residence in Oakland. Supported by funding from the California Department of Community Services and Development’s Low-Income Weatherization Program, the 65-module, 25.675 kW-DC system is estimated to produce 40.33 MWh annually, reducing the residence’s energy load by nearly 9%. Installed in October 2024, the system is expected to be online by the end of the year. Emma Soderstrom, the GRID Project Manager who led the project, highlighted the importance of working with organizations like Operation Dignity: “Our part is to provide the best possible service and deliver on our promises. It’s so rewarding to have a big idea of how to help another organization and then actually do the work to make that vision a reality.” Through this collaboration, GRID is helping to lower Operation Dignity’s energy costs and support its transition to renewable energy, aligning with our shared commitment to community-centered solutions and services for underserved populations. #VeteransDay #CommunityPowered #SolarForGood
