A blast from the not so distant past!
Diggin In The Crates / Returning to the Archives Yesterday, I found myself digging through a few gigabytes of?#branding graphics and came across this incredible project from 2020! (Can you believe it's been 5 years already ?? ) ?? Fostering Life ?? Fostering Life is a program founded by Roschanda Fletcher, EdD to provide direct support to foster youth to encourage academic achievement and goal setting. At a minimum, the program ensures that every youth has the necessary undergarments, toiletries, necessities, and access to mentors. Its focus is on supporting academic success, developing necessary life skills, and empowering young leaders. The program's vision ?? : "We envision and strive to create a world in which foster youth have the opportunities and support needed to set, pursue, and achieve their desired goals," inspired me to refresh the #brand! I fondly look back on this project because it was one of our first few clients, and I learned more during the experience than I could ever hope to put into words. The branding landscape is ever-changing, and while it may seem that some tools no longer serve a purpose, it could be that their usefulness is simply be overlooked. Our Creative Marketing Director, sheds some on this very topic by posing the question "Where are all the slogans and taglines?".
Where are all the slogans and taglines? Yesterday I was watching one of those hour-long compilations of commercials ?? from the 80’s & 90’s on YouTube when I noticed something that struck me as odd. ?? What happened to all the #slogans and #taglines?!??? Well to put it simply, #branding has evolved significantly in the digital age, especially with the rise of influencer #marketing! As goes the audience, so does the way you message to that audience. And the current audience that most consumer brands are appealing to are Gen Z and they don’t have the same appreciation for branding as say a millennial like myself. That doesn’t make slogans and taglines any less significant though. To quote an article(source below) I read on this very topic “Despite the digital shift, the fundamentals for creating memorable taglines remain: specificity, brevity, and emotional resonance are crucial for brand attachment “ Taglines and slogans can be a highly effective tool ? in your #brand toolkit! They act as a de facto brand promise and bring clarity to what your organization or business stands for or what services it provides. Take our tagline for example: At Greywhale, “We Create the Brand Your Work Deserves”.??? It very clearly states what we do and why we do it. I’ll even offer some push back on the notion that they aren’t as important as they once were, and say in this age of snippets, sound bites, and short form video content. Picking Up The Pieces - A story about one of my favorite Logos Long ago, during what seemed like and are probably some of the darkest days we will probably know this century (COVID lockdown), Reggie Hammond tasked me with creating a logo for his client, Daniel L. Willis. I was happy to do so, especially considering Puzzled Peace is an experience organization and Douglas County leader in providing high-quality/research-based Autism and behavioral services. Moved by Dan's purpose and commitment, I was compelled to manifest what has come to be one of my personal favorites but possibly the best logos I've ever had a hand in creating. He was over the moon and even tasked me with creating a flyer, which I did, building off the same #design principles laid out in the logo. The thing is, I never met him. That was until December 30th, during NIA Forward, when his infectious smile caught my eye. I walked over to him and told him exactly as I said in this post: that the #logo is one of my favorites, if not my best. He was so happy to meet me and expressed his love for my work in person some five years later. I'm telling this story today because I finally have time to (lol) and because sometimes the impact of your effort takes time to come to fruition. #Branding today will not result in instantaneous success, but with consistent effort, you can create a #brand that moves people. I wish Dan the best with Puzzled Peace ?? and hope to work with him again!

Check this out! a thrifty #branding find! Designing Brand Identity By Alina Wheeler - Third Edition I love finding and reading about what branding was like before it became my key focus at Greywhale llc.. While a lot has stayed the same, much has changed significantly since this book's original publication date of 2009! This book doesn't mention social media at all—imagine that! I'll be delving into this book this week and sharing any interesting tidbits or gems lost to the past!
